Bears Look For Road Upsets to Close Regular Season
BERKELEY -Â Â The momentum of a series sweep won't have time to settle before California is back in action.
The Golden Bears, who returned to Berkeley in the early morning Monday after a thrilling 3-1 win to clinch its third conference series, this time against No. 18 Washington State - its highest ranked victory of the season, head to Tucson for a bout with No. 23 Arizona (20-10, 9-9 Pac-12) on Wednesday.Â
The match begins at 3 p.m. (PT) and will be live streamed on Pac-12.com.Â
Hoping for an at-large playoff bid, Cal (15-14, 7-11Â Pac-12) could make a case for itself, but will have an uphill battle the entire week as it closes the regular season at No. 2 Stanford (26-1, 18-0 Pac-12), who claimed the conference title, on Saturday at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks.Â
With collective energy spurring the Bears on, the task is one they are ready to take on despite unfavorable historical numbers. The current opportunities hold more important to the Bears, who have been shifting the culture and disrupting the preseason poll that projected Cal to finish last in the league.
Still, Cal has continued to make a case with numbers similar to its successful 2013 campaign, when the Bears advanced to the NCAA second round.
On par, the Bears have won the most games since 2013, picked up three conference series sweeps, and defeated the most top-25 conference opponents (4) since 2011. Cal also went undefeated at home during its non conference slate under first year head coach Jennifer Dorr, who is the first in Cal's volleyball program to obtain that benchmark in their opening season.
The Bears are also coming off notable performances with Mima Mirkovic posting a pair of double-double performances, including a career-best 23 kills against Washington. Bailee Huizenga also matched her career high with four aces against the Cougars.
Middles Preslie Anderson and Lauren Forte, both from the Phoenix area, continue to be top performers in the league as they rank third and eighth in hitting percentage, respectively. Forte, a redshirt freshman, also ranks third averaging 1.27 blocks per set.
While Cal trails 25-40 in the all-time series, the teams have traded wins going 2-2 in the last four meetings, both defending their home courts. Cal last won in Tucson in 2012 in a 3-1 decision.
It will be the lone meeting with the Wildcats for the season.Â
Cal closes the regular season with the Big Spike and hope to best the Cardinal for the first time since 2011 in a 3-1 win at Stanford.
