Bears Battle In Season Finale

Cal Falls To No. 1 Stanford, 2-0, To Close Out Season

BERKELEY – The 2018 Cal women's soccer season came to a close on Friday evening, as the Golden Bears took on Bay Area rival Stanford at Edwards Stadium. Cal battled from the opening kickoff through the final whistle, but a brace by Cardinal midfielder Jordan DiBiasi saw top-ranked Stanford (16-0-2, 9-0-1 Pac-12) come away with the 2-0 victory. The Golden Bears close the season with an overall record of 5-12-2 on the year.

"As a coaching staff we are exceptionally proud of the team," said Cal head coach Neil McGuire. "Obviously, it's not been the season we hoped for, but today our players came out showed themselves to be a very high-quality team against what can only be described as outstanding an outstanding opponent in Stanford. [Stanford head coach Paul Ratcliffe] has built a great program and a great team. I think it was a great spectacle for the fans."

The crowd of nearly 1,200 fans was treated to a high-energy affair, as Cal and Stanford squared off for the 38th time. Stanford withstood an early stretch of high-pressure by the Bears and was able to break through in the 10th minute, as DiBiasi scored her sixth goal of the season. Senior defender Alana Cook dropped a longball in behind the Bears' backline and DiBiasi was able to win the footrace with her defender, banging the bouncing ball past an on-rushing Olivia Sekany for the first goal of the day.

The Bears nearly tied the match in the 34th minute when Abi Kim got into the box and shook her defender. The junior standout curled a shot that seemed destined for the upper-90, but it hit off the post and back into play.

Stanford added to its lead in the 55th minute when DiBiasi bagged her second of the game. The senior midfielder picked off an errant pass from the Cal defense and created some room before beating Sekany with a strike to the far post.

Sekany made three saves for the Bears, before giving way to Brooke Lisowski, who recorded one save of her own. Alison Jahansouz made two saves for Stanford in the win.

Despite the two-goal deficit, the Bears continued to press, and created a flurry of chances in the attacking third over the final 25 minutes, but were unable to find the back of the net.

Stanford held a 13-7 advantage overall in shots and earned seven corners on the day, compared to six for the Golden Bears. Kim, who led the Bears in scoring this season with six goals, had a team-high two shots for the Bears, creating problems all game long with her pace.

Friday's game began with Senior Day celebrations, as the Bears recognized Lisowksi, Miranda Nild, Anja Koehler, and Emily Kasa for their contributions to the program. In their four years in Berkeley, the senior class amassed a total of 44 wins while leading the Bears to success both on the pitch and in the classroom.
