SAN DIEGO – The Cal women's basketball team remains unbeaten on the year, gutting out a 65-57 victory over Tulane on Friday afternoon at San Diego's Jenny Craig Pavilion. The first day of the San Diego Thanksgiving Tournament saw the Golden Bears (5-0, 0-0 Pac-12) overcome a slow start to hand the previously unbeaten Green Wave (3-1, 0-0 AAC) their first loss of the year.
Despite sitting much of the first half with foul trouble, senior
Kristine Anigwe led the Bears with 17 points and added 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the year. Sophomore
Kianna Smith added 16 points for the Bears and went a perfect 4-4 from the foul line over the final 27 seconds to seal the victory for the Bears. Â
Asha Thomas added 10 points for the Bears while graduate transfer Receé Caldwell chipped in eight points and eight assists.
Tulane's Dynah Jones led all scorers with 22 points, going 4-5 from the floor while Krystal Freeman added 16 points for the Green Wave.
The Bears got off to a hot start from beyond the arc, connecting on three attempts from beyond the arc in the first quarter. However, Cal's offensive went cold for a long stretch in the second quarter and Tulane was able to capitalize, getting back into the game with a 10-1 run.
Leading by three at the half, Cal started to find its touch again in the third quarter. The Bears closed the third quarter on a 13-5 run, highlighted by a three from Anigwe and back-to-back triples by Caldwell. Cal connected on a season-high 10 three-pointers, shooting 34.5 percent (10-29) from deep. Anigwe, a candidate for the 2019 Lisa Leslie Award as the top center in the country, matched her career-high with three made three-pointers. Playing in her 100
th career game at Cal, Anigwe scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the second half, also adding three blocked shots.
Smith paced the Bears with 10 points in the first half and is now averaging 16.7 points per game over her last three outings. A sophomore from Moreno Valley, California, Smith has now scored in double-figures in the last three games, tied for the longest such streak of her career.
The Bears out-rebounded Tulane, 43-34, led by Anigwe's 10 boards and a new career-high 9 rebounds from
Jaelyn Brown.
CJ West added seven rebounds for the Bears after missing the last two games due to injury.
Cal will be back in action on Saturday, squaring off against San Diego at 4 p.m. PT in the final game of the San Diego Thanksgiving Tournament. The Toreros (2-2, 0-0 WCC) are coming off an 83-82 victory over Cleveland State in Friday's Tournament opener.
