BERKELEY – Another strong season for the Cal men's water polo team continues to reap rewards when it comes to award season as five Golden Bears have been named All-American by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC).

Senior Johnny Hooper led the list, earning a spot on the first team for the third year in a row and closing his career with a fourth All-America nod. Senior Vassilis Tzavaras and junior Safak Simsek both landed a spot on the third team while junior Bernardo Carelli and senior Odysseas Masmanidis, who also earned his fourth All-America award, received honorable mention.

Hooper wrapped up a storied collegiate career with another tremendous season, leading the Bears with 49 goals in only 15 matches played. The native of Los Angeles, Calif. also added 48 assists, 39 steals and 26 ejections earned despite missing the first nine games of the year due to international duty with Team USA. Hooper ended his Cal career with 245 goals, a mark that puts him second on the Bears' all-time list behind only Chris Humbert.

Tzavaras also put the finishing touches on a standout Cal career, serving as co-captain alongside Hooper in 2018. A native of Athens, Greece, he led the team with 60 assists and 24 field blocks while also adding 38 goals, 38 steals and 17 ejections earned. Tzavaras earned MPSF Player of the Week honors after the season-opening Triton Invitational thanks to a four-match weekend in which he compiled a stat line of nine goals, 18 assists, nine steals, two blocks and three ejections earned.

Simsek earned his first All-America award thanks to a tremendous offensive season as one of the nation's top left-handed attackers. Hailing from Istanbul, Turkey, Simsek ranked second on the team with 47 goals and ended the regular season fifth in the MPSF with a two goals per game average. He also delivered one of the signature moments of the 2018 season when his goal with six seconds left helped Cal beat USC 10-9 in the semifinals of the MPSF Championships.

Carelli also earned his first All-America nod thanks to his play as Cal's starting goalkeeper. After earning the job to begin the year, the native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil made an immediate impact by stopping 21 shots against UC Irvine on opening weekend. He finished the year with a 10.21 saves per game average and an 8.99 goals against average with a total of 202 saves on the season.

Masmanidis rounded out the list with his fourth All-America honor as Cal's man in the middle again served as one of the nation's top options at 2 meters. The left-hander from Athens, Greece led the team in ejections earned with 42 and scored 29 goals despite missing part of the season due to injury. He capped his career as both a four-time All-America and All-MPSF performer and finished with 165 career goals.
