BERKELEY – Freshman
Andre Kelly scored a career-high 17 points and added nine rebounds but the Cal men's basketball team fell to USF 79-60 on Wednesday night at Haas Pavilion.
It marked the third time in the past four games Kelly has scored in double-figures. Kelly fell one rebound short of collecting his first career double-double. His career-high is 10 rebounds.
Included in Kelly's scoring effort was his first career 3-pointer – on his first career attempt.
Sophomore Darius McNeil added 16 points for the Bears (2-5) and point guard
Paris Austin recorded a season-high eight assists, bettering his six-assist performance during Cal's victory over Hampton on Nov. 13.
The Dons jumped out to an early lead but Kelly's 3-pointer capped an 8-0 run that helped Cal trim the deficit to 21-19 with 6:51 left in the first half. But USF answered with a 6-0 streak and built a 34-24 lead at halftime.
The Bears scored the first three points of the second half but the Dons went on a 19-5 run to pull away.
"We got beat by a veteran team that wanted it more than we did tonight," Cal head coach
Wyking Jones said. "They had more fight than we did. We're young and they're an experienced team, and it looked like it tonight. We have to watch film and we have to come out and compete more."
Cal returns to the court Saturday when it hosts San Diego State at Haas Pavilion at 7:30 p.m. The game will air on the Pac-12 Networks.
