Bears Post Three Wins At Husky Classic
Davis, Marten and Kaukolahti claim victories in Seattle
SEATTLE, Wash. – California track & field posted three wins and collected 14 personal bests on Saturday at the Husky Classic at Dempsey Indoor. Over two days of action in Seattle, the Bears notched 16 top-five finishes and 19 personal bests.
Ashtyn Davis won the 60m hurdles competition with a season best time of 7.85 seconds.
Misana Viltz won the his final heat and finished in third-place with a time of 8.07 seconds. Davis qualified for the final with the fastest mark of the morning session with a time of 7.87 while Viltz had the third-best qualifying mark of 8.17.
In her first triple jump competition in two years,
Isabella Marten claimed first place with a leap of 42-0.00. Marten was joined on the podium by
Ashley Anderson who notched a second place finish with a leap of 41-9.75. On the men's side,
Tuomas Kaukolahti started his career with a second straight triple jump victory. He jumped 52-9.25 to better his personal best and currently sits in fourth on the school's all-time list.
McKay Johnson continued his stellar redshirt freshman season as he had a shot put of 62-10.00 which is the second-best mark in school history behind his own school record which he set two weeks ago at the UW Invitational.
Lauren Martinez set a new personal best in the pole vault as she took second place. Martinez cleared the same height as the winner at 13-7.00, but needed two chances to do it, while Ellie Talius cleared it one her first attempt so Martinez had to settle for second place. Martinez bettered her third-place mark in school history and is now just five inches from setting the record.
The Bears found some success in the 60m dash as they placed two people in the top six on both the men's and women's side.
Jackie Patterson took fourth with a new personal best of 7.59 seconds. Patterson moved into a tie for sixth on the school's all-time indoor list. Scholis finished in sixth place with a time of 7.62. On the men's side
Diab Davis took fifth place with a time of 6.93 while
Branden Smith set a personal best with a time of 6.95.
In his first action at Cal, freshman Sanjay Kettles nearly cracked the school's all-time top-10 list. Kettles jumped 23-10.00 on his second attempt, which falls 3/4 of an inch from 10
th place on the school's all-time list. Kettles took second in the competition and
Jared Geredes took fourth. Geredes leapt 23-8.25 on his final attempt to set a new personal best.
Saturday's action started with prelims women's 60m hurdles. Freshmen
Deshae Wise and
Windy Margerum both won their sections with new personal bests. Wise recorded the eighth-fastest time in school history with a mark of 8.84 to advance to the final while Margerum notched a new personal mark of 9.11. Wise bettered her time in the final as she took eighth place with a new personal best of 8.71 and moved into a tie for fourth on the school's all-time list.
Destiny Parker took fifth place in the weight throw with a mark of 60-5.75.
Imani Bierly won her section of the contest with a throw of 56-1.00.
The Bears will return to Seattle for the MPSF Championship in two weeks. The competition will be held February 23-24 at Dempsey Indoor.
