SACRAMENTO – California (3-0) delivered its first run-rule of the season to open its doubleheader day at the 2018 Capitol City Classic stunning Santa Clara (0-5) in a 9-1 win behind a strong batting effort that brought seven different Bears across the plate on Sunday.

Freshman Mikayla Coelho unlocked the day with a two-run homer in the first frame to bring home junior Jazmyn Jackson who led off with a single and a stolen base to get into scoring position.

The momentum was set as Cal's scoring frenzy continued through the fourth inning, with five runs being scored during the Bears' last at-bat to deliver the final margin for the eight run rule to go into effect.

Coelho, who has been the Bears leading scorer over weekend with five runs so far, found her fifth trip home a bit easier as she got a free trip to the plate after freshman Lauren Espalin drew a walk with loaded bases.

Junior Kobie Pettis also made her way around the bases on a pair of occasions after drawing walks on 2 of 3 trips to the plate.

Cal collectively earned eight RBIs, led by freshmen Coelho and Sparacino with two apiece. The duo also shared the hitting load with Jackson and Bradie Fillmore each connecting twice.

In all, Taurie Pogue, Lindsay Rood, Espalin, and Sparacino also earned runs as the Bears scored in all four halves.

Zoe Conley earned her second win of the weekend with a strong showing in the circle as she retired five batters, including delivering three consecutive strikeouts in a three-up, three-down inning. The Berkeley, Calif., gave up just one hit in the contest, a season best.

To close the day, Cal will see host-team Sacramento State for the first time this weekend. The match-up is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. (PT) with live stats, audio and video available.
