Bears Roll Through Doubleheader Day

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – A well-deserved trip to get ice cream was a secondary highlight after the Bears went 2-0 to open play at the Mary Nutter Classic on Saturday.

The Bears (7-0) cemented their undefeated showing delivering an 8-0 run rule to Loyola Marymount (1-4-1) in five innings to conclude a doubleheader day.

"It was a tremendous showing by the ladies," said head coach Diane Ninemire. "It was a good jumping off point and we have to do it again tomorrow. Our pitchers continue to be great, and what an effort by Kama today with so many strikeouts."

In another two-game outing, Cal opens against UC Santa Barbara at 10 a.m. (PT) before a 12:30 p.m. meeting with Cal Poly. The Bears downed the Gauchos in a 2-0 season opener in Sacramento a week ago and remain perfect on the season.

Cal 8, LMU 0
After a pair of scoreless innings, the Bears recorded its second five-run half of the day to stun the Lions. They followed with another three-run showing in the bottom of the fourth to cement the eight run lead and finish things early.

Kobie Pettis led the offensive efforts with a pair of RBI doubles to send home Lindsay Rood and Mikayla Coelho to move things to 4-0. She finished with as many runs of her own, the first in the bottom of the third to close the first wave of runs, and then the first baseman crossed the plate to round out the day for the Bears in the bottom of the fourth.

"Getting those RBIs and runs today was easy because Jaz (Jamyn Jackson), Linds (Rood), and Mik (Coelho) did a great job getting on base and setting the table," said Pettis. "That just put me in the position to be able to keep the momentum going and the rest of the lineup did a great job doing the same."

Krysten McCue added a pair of scores and hits, while freshman Karlee Sparacino notched two RBI singles to bring Pettis home on both occasions. Sparacino leads the Bears so far this season with a .421 batting average.

Zoe Conley earned her fourth win of the year with four strikeouts on the day and holds a 0.28 ERA.

Cal 9, Fordham 2
Cal put on a pitching clinic to open the day with Kamalani Dung recording a career-best 15 strikeouts against Fordham (0-2) en route to a decisive 9-2 win on Saturday morning. Dung, who holds a 3-0 win-loss record and a 0.33 ERA, opened with five consecutive strikeouts on her way to her noteworthy performance to move the Bears to 6-0 all-time against the Rams.

"Pitching wise, I feel completely different this year," said Dung, a transfer from Fresno State. "During the fall I had been working hard on some new pitches, and it's cool to see the outcome when I put them in action.

"I came to Cal to pitch alongside Zoe and the rest of our pitching staff. They've had a huge contribution to my confidence and early successes."

Offense carried its own weight with seven different Bears scoring runs, led by a season-best three runs for junior Lindsay Rood. The Bears recorded their first of two five-run halves of the day to pull away, after the Rams scored two runs in top of the fourth to bring things to 3-2 and come within one run.

"It's good to see our team starting to settle in and get rolling this season," Dung added. "Everyone did their job, and the hitters did great."
