Another Day, Another Shutout, Another Run Rule
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – California remains undefeated through the second day of the Mary Nutter Classic posting two wins in its second doubleheader slate of the weekend.
Â
The 23rd-ranked Golden Bears opened Sunday with an 11-0 shutout against UC Santa Barbara, which has gone scoreless against the Cal this season – the Bears posted a 2-0 decision against the Guachos in the season opener at Sacramento. The momentum lasted through game two as Cal notched its second run-rule of the weekend in a 9-1 showing versus Cal Poly and finished in five innings.
Â
Through four games Cal has amassed 37 runs, allowing just three to opponents.
Â
"I think the story is our pitchers and how they've been able to keep batters off balance and they've only been throwing five innings," said head coach
Diane Ninemire. "Our offense is doing a tremendous job. I'm impressed with our whole lineup. We're able to give a lot of people a lot of opportunities. They're making the most of them."
 Â
Cal 11, UCSB 0
A slow start for the Bears means just five runs in four innings, but they made up for it in the final at-bat notching seven runs in the top of the seventh to tack an 11-0 effort to the win column.
Â
A collective effort kicked off the morning for Cal as nine different players made their way round the bases against the Gauchos. The effort was highlighted by
Lindsay Rood's three-run homer that brought home sophomore
Jordan Fines and freshman
Sabrina Nunez, who found the place twice in the opening game.
Â
Rood collected two runs, two hits and four RBIs on the day.
Â
"Today was a team effort at the plate," Rood said. "Our bats are coming alive from the top to bottom of the line up so it gives us confidence to get up there and take our hacks knowing that we are there to pick each other up."
Â
Senior
Kobie Pettis continued provide offensive balance for the Bears with three hits and an RBI that brought Rood home in the opening frame. Pettis is batting a .400 through nine games so far.
Â
Cal 9, Cal Poly 1
The bats were blazing for the Bears to close the afternoon as Cal notched 12 hits en route to a five-inning 9-1 run-rule over the Mustangs. Cal managed a run in 4 of 5 innings, allowing Cal Poly a lone run in the bottom of the third.
Â
The Bears posted two three-run innings, and were led by
Bradie Fillmore who collected three hits, three runs and five RBIs. The sophomore's performance was highlighted by a three-run homer to seal the final scoring margin. She now leads the Bears from the plate with a .409 batting average.
Â
"It was so fun to be able to come together as a team today and execute our game plan," said Fillmore, an Eagle, Idaho native. "Today is exactly what we wanted, and I'm so happy to contribute to the team effort."
Â
Freshman
Karlee Sparacino added three runs and a pair of hits of her own and continues to be a threat at the plate with a .370 batting average.
Â
Zoe Conley was stellar in the circle to keep the pitching potency alive for the Bears. The Berkeley, native, punctuated the defenses effort from the circle retiring three batters in a row on swings in the final inning to finish early.
