Anigwe Powers Bears To Win In Pullman

PULLMAN, Washington – Kristine Anigwe was dominant down low, matching her season-high with 30 points to lead Cal to a 67-54 win over Washington State on Friday night at Beasley Coliseum. Anigwe single-handedly outscored the Cougars, 19-16, over the second and third quarters and added 12 rebounds for her second double-double in as many games. With the win, the Golden Bears (19-9, 10-7 Pac-12) snapped a three-game road losing streak and have now matched their conference win total from the previous two seasons combined.

Alexys Swedlund led Washington State (10-19, 3-14 Pac-12) with 19 points while Penina Davidson, Asha Thomas, and Kianna Smith each added eight points for the Bears, while Smith and Thomas also dished out six assists each.

After a slow start by both teams, Cal jumped out to a 10-3 lead before Washington State started heating up from beyond the arc, connected on four consecutive three-point attempts midway through the first quarter. Cougars guard Alexys Swedlund scored 11 of her career-high 19 points in the opening frame.

However, Cal's interior game proved too much to handle, as Cal scored 14 of its 15 second quarter points in the paint to reclaim the lead heading into the locker room. Anigwe, who missed three of her first four field goal attempts, missed just twice the remainder of the game, finishing 14-19 from the floor. A candidate for National Player of the Year, Anigwe scored 30 points in 32 minutes of action for her second 30-point outing of the season and the tenth of the career. Anigwe posted back-to-back double-doubles for the second time this season and now has 39 double-doubles in her career.

Cal's posts were efficient on the afternoon, as Davidson, Anigwe, and CJ West shot a combined 72 percent (21-29) from the floor, as the Bears outscored the Cougars, 48-14, in the paint.

The Bears' win avenges last season's 84-79 loss to the Cougars at Beasley Coliseum and marks Cal's second win this season when trailing after the first quarter.

Cal will close out the 2017-18 regular season in Seattle, squaring off against Washington at 3 p.m. PT on Sunday. The Golden Bears beat the Huskies, 69-60, on January 12 at Haas Pavilion, led by a 26-point, 10-rebound effort from Anigwe. The Bears are looking for their first win at Alaskan Airlines Arena since the 2013-14 season.
