Bears Blank The Rainbows
HONOLULU– True to island lifestyle, No. 15 California took its time getting on the board in its opening game at the 2018 Texaco Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament against host-team Hawai'i in Honolulu on Wednesday.
Â
The Golden Bears (16-1) went four frames before bringing in a quartet of runs in the top of the fifth, on their way to downing the Rainbow Warriors (6-7) 5-0. Â
Â
Jazmyn Jackson's two RBI double ignited the late offensive run for Cal which had two outs and a pair on as the senior came to bat. Freshman
Mikayla Coelho followed with her fourth homer of the season to bring Jackson home and extend things to 4-0. Coelho currently leads the Bears with 23 hits and 17 RBIs on the season.
Â
Cal's
Krysten McCue brought in an insurance run with two outs in the top of the sixth on an RBI single from
Lindsay Rood. McCue led the game with three hits.
Â
In her first return home to play as a collegiate athlete, Waianae, Hawai'I, native,
Kamalani Dung picked up her eighth win of the season delivering five strikeouts before
Zoe Conley came in as relief in the bottom of the fifth. Conley picked up her fourth save of the season.
"It meant a lot to me to play at home in front of my family," Dung said. " I was a little nervous when I heard the crowd erupt with cheering when they called my name, but settled in as the game went on. I never thought my family would be able to see me pitch in person, and it's a huge blessing for this opportunity.
"Coming out and seeing all the Bears fans, my family, and getting the shutout against Hawaii - it was a good day, but this team is not done yet."
Â
The Bears continue their play in paradise on Thursday as they face UTEP at 3 p.m. (PT).
