Bears Open 2018 With Win Over UC Davis, 11-9

DAVIS - Key contributions from multiple Golden Bears led to the California women's lacrosse team beating UC Davis, 11-9, in the 2018 season opener on Friday.

Caroline Corzel paced the Bears with four points on two goals and two assists. She was one of four Bears to find the back of the net twice. Kirsten Swanson, Eliza Christman and Parker Garrett also scored twice, while Kate Mattimore, Lauren Hickman and Marisa Kuberra tallied goals, as well. Corzel posted eight shots on goal while Swanson and Christman had six each.

"It was a total team effort today," head coach Brooke Eubanks said. "We locked it down on defense and worked together. On offense, we had nine different people contributing points."

An even first half saw the Bears and Aggies trading goals. Cal went into halftime with a 6-5 lead. In addition to having the lead, the Bears got an extra boost of momentum going into the break as they took the lead on a goal just as time expired from Christman.

Through the first 25 minutes of the second half, the Bears outscored the Aggies, 5-1, to take control of the game despite a late surge by UC Davis. During Cal's five consecutive goal streak, Swanson scored both of her goals and freshman Nikki Zaccaro tallied two assists.

Jenny Wilkens collected 10 saves for her 15th career double-digit save performance. She and Meredith Haggerty led all players with four ground balls. Elizabeth Koehler scooped up six draw controls to lead all players in that category.

Besides Zaccaro, another freshman who made an impact in her first collegiate game was Marina Smith who garnered three caused turnovers.

The Bears forced 22 Aggie turnovers to 12 for Cal. The Bears also notched 22 ground balls to 17 for UC Davis. Cal successfully converted 19 of 21 clear attempts.

Cal returns to Berkeley for its home opener on Sunday, Feb. 11, at noon against San Diego State from California Memorial Stadium.
