Dung Downs UTEP with Perfect Game
HONOLULU – A perfect game in paradise is priceless.
Â
And even more so for junior
Kamalani Dung, who earned her first flawless win on Thursday in front of her family, as the 15th-ranked Bears (17-1) downed UTEP (9-8) 4-0 in Honolulu, Dung's hometown.
Â
The Waianae, Hawai'i, native's showing marks Cal's first perfect game since 2010 when All-American pitcher Jolene Henderson and the Bears run-ruled Bucknell 8-0 in five innings.
Dung, who picked up her ninth win of the season and remains undefeated in the circle, delivered 12 strikeouts, just under her 15-strikeout career best, en route to her perfect showing.Â
Â
"It was awesome to throw my first perfect game at home in front of my friends, family and the Cal fans," said Dung, who transferred from Fresno State. "I knew I was going for a perfect game in the last inning and refused to walk the second batter I faced. I made sure that if my perfect game was being ruined, the girl I was facing would've hit to earn it.
Â
My team was spot on defensively and got on the board early to make it possible. Chuck (D'Arcy) called a great game."
Cal's offense came out fiercely as well, posting four runs in the opening frame.
Lindsay Rood drew a walk to lead off and stole second during
Jazmyn Jackson's opening appearance at the plate. Jackson singled and the pair stole home and second base simultaneously to get on the board.
Â
Mikayla Coelho brought Jackson across the plate on an RBI single and
Kobie Pettis knocked a single to keep the frame going.
Â
Senior outfielder
Taurie Pogue punched in a two-RBI single with a pair of outs on the board to provide the final margin, as Cal went without a run the rest of the game.
Â
The Bears continue their Hawaii journey on Friday at 1 p.m. (PT) against James Madison.
