Cal Paused at Plate In Pac-12 Opener
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Despite a pair of timely homers pulled in by sophomore
Bradie Fillmore for a single-game career best, No. 16 California (23-4) was unable to match No. 25 Oregon State's offensive tenacity allowing the Beavers (18-9) to score in all six frames on the way to a 10-5 loss to open Pac-12 play on Friday at OSU Softball Complex in Corvallis, Ore.
Â
Fillmore sparked the offense, at least briefly, in the top of the second with a perfect bomb through center field to bring things to 1-1 and then accounted for a pair in the top of the fourth, this time, on a two-run dinger that brought home
Kobie Pettis who drew a walk to get on.
Â
Pettis made her way home again on a fielder's choice and
Taurie Pogue also added a run to bring the count within two to 7-5 Â in the top of the sixth, but could not hold the Beavers off after they provided the final margin on a three-run homer in the bottom of the frame.
The Beavers recorded runs in each of its six at-bats, including three-run halves in the bottom of the second and in the bottom of the sixth.
Cal suffered its largest loss of the season, allowing 10 runs for the first time since a 10-0 shutout suffered at Arizona State last season.
Â
The frustration was visible for the Bears who had ample opportunity to bring in more runs, but could not build enough consistency at the plate to move runners around the bases.
Â
Senior
Jazmyn Jackson felt the sting after batting 1.000 on the day leading the Bears with four hits, including a double, but was left on base each occasion.
Â
Zoe Conley (10-4) was credited with the loss and gave up a season-high six earned runs.
Kamalani Dung stepped in as relief in the bottom of the sixth with a pair runners on base.
Â
Game 2 of the series is slated for a noon (PT) start on Saturday with a live broadcast on Pac-12 Network and live stats available at CalBears.com.
