HONOLULU – No. 15 California was unable to collect enough insurance runs as James Madison recovered from a one-run deficit to upend the Golden Bears 5-1 on Friday at the 2018 Texaco Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament.

The Bears posted a run on an RBI double from freshman Mikayla Coelho to bring home Lindsay Rood, but the Bears remained scoreless the remaining frames.

Cal was perfect through the first four innings defensively, with Zoe Conley retiring seven batters swinging on her way to a career-best 11 strikeouts. Unfortunately, the bats kept swinging for the Dukes who RBI singled to tie things at 1-1 in the top of sixth and homered to take the lead 2-1 in the top of the seventh, before posting three more runs in their final at-bat to keep the Bears out of reach.

Conley picks up her second loss of the season and was relieved in the top of the sixth by Kamalani Dung, who pitched a perfect game on Thursday.

A rare matchup for Cal, JMU leads the all-time series 3-0.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. (PT) matchup against East Carolina.
