Bears Fall In Extra Innings

BERKELEY – On Friday, the No. 20 Golden Bears battled through 10 frames with the No. 10 Sun Devils, but the Bears were unable to respond to the blasts balls of their Pac-12 foes and fell 4-2 in California's first appearance at home since Feb. 14.

The Bears eager return to Levine-Fricke Field was squelched by Arizona State's trio of homers to keep things just out of reach for Cal (24-6, 1-3 Pac-12).

Cal gave up two homers during regulation play in the top of the second and seventh frames, as Jazmyn Jackson who went 2-of-4 at the plate and recorded a pair of hits, found her way home on a fielder's choice to tie things at 1-1.

After trailing 2-1 with two outs in the seventh inning, Cal's Lindsay Rood singled, which would have loaded the bases, but Krysten McCue capitalized on a throwing error during the play to find her way home from second base and send things into extra innings.

Both teams went through the eighth and ninth frames scoreless, but ASU (25-4, 3-1 Pac-12) knocked a two-run homer through center field in the 10th to close the day.

Kamalani Dung threw a solid seven strikeouts through 7.0 innings pitched, but Zoe Conley who came in during extended play was credited with the loss after 3.0 innings. Conley is now 10-6 on the season.

Game 2 of the Cal-ASU series is scheduled for Saturday at 3:30 p.m. (PT).
