ASU Nips Cal In Extra Innings
BERKELEY – No. 20 Cal and 12th-ranked Arizona State battled through extra innings for the second day in a row. Unfortunately, for the Bears, the outcome was the same, with the Sun Devils coming out on top in the end Saturday afternoon.
Â
ASU scored two runs in the top of the 10th claim the 3-1 win at Levine-Fricke Field. On Friday, the Sun Devils won, 4-2, in 10 innings.
Â
Locked in a pitchers' duel, Cal (24-7) and ASU (26-4) struggled to score until the sixth inning, with ASU striking first. With two outs in the top half of the frame, the Sun Devils rallied. Marisa Stankiewicz walked and came around to score on a double by Nichole Chilson to make it 1-0.
Â
Cal, though, responded in the bottom of the inning.
Lindsay Rood singled and
Bradie Fillmore doubled to put runners on second and third.
Kobie Pettis followed with a dribbler in front of the plate, which allowed Rood to get home uncontested and tie the game at 1-1.
Â
In the fateful 10th inning, back-to-back doubles by ASU scored the go-ahead run, and Danielle Gibson's single made it 3-1 ASU. Sun Devil reliever G Juarez, who entered the game in the eighth, struck out the side in Cal's half of the inning to secure the win.
Â
Neither team could mount much of a challenge early on. Cal did put runners on second and third in the third inning, but Rood grounded out to end the threat. In the fourth, ASU loaded the bases with one out, and Cal starter
Zoe Conley got a grounder and a pop up to keep the contest scoreless at the time.
Â
In extra innings, both teams got their first two runners on in the eighth, but neither team could get a run across.
Â
Conley went the distance for Cal and took the loss to fall to 10-7 despite striking out nine batters. Rood and
Jazmyn Jackson had two hits apiece to lead the Bear offense.
Â
Cal and ASU conclude their three-game series on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Levine-Fricke Field. The contest will be televised by the Pac-12 Network.
