Bears Close Pac-12/Big-10 Challenge With Three Wins
Johnson, Martinez And Marten Earn Individual Victories On Day Two
TEMPE, Ariz. – The Bears collected three individual wins and 18 top-five finishes on day two of competition at the Pac-12/Big-10 Challenge on Saturday at Sun Angel Stadium.
Lauren Martinez opened her outdoor campaign with a first-place finish in the women's pole vault competition. Martinez cleared 13-2.25 to earn the win. This was her first outdoor meet after taking 10
th at the NCAA Indoor Championship.
McKay Johnson was another Bear making his outdoor debut and Johnson didn't disappoint. He won the shot put competition with a mark of 63-8.75. That moves Johnson up to fifth on the school's all-time record book. Johnson also took third in the discus with a mark of 176-2.
Peter Simon followed Johnson in the shot put as he took second place with a mark of 62-4.00.
Isabella Marten and
Ashley Anderson took the top two spots in the women's triple jump competition. Marten jumped 42-4.75 while Anderson followed with a mark of 41-10.50. They were the only two athletes in the competition to clear 40 feet and gave the Bears two more top-five finishes.
The Bears opened Saturday's competition with the women's discus.
Kendall Mader claimed a third place finish with a throw of 167-8.
Amarie Bremel took fifth place with a mark of 165-7 while
Emma DeSilva set a new personal best while taking seventh place. Desilva notched a throw of 157-6 to beat her previous best by three inches.
In a loaded 100m hurdles field, freshman
Deshae Wise acquitted herself well and set a new personal best with a time of 14.01. That mark bettered her previous best by .02 seconds and broke a tie for ninth on the school's all-time record book. Meanwhile,
Ashtyn Davis opened up in the men's 110m hurdles with a time of 13.86 to notch third place.
Freshman
Noelle Schiller took third in the long jump competition as she recorded a leap of 19-4.25 while leaping into the wind. Sophomore
Paramveer Chohan recorded a time of 47.37 to take second place in the 400m dash. That mark was a personal outdoors best for Chohan.
Cal finished fourth on the men's side as the Bears racked up 77 points. The women's team was able to score 87 points and took fifth place in the eight-team competition.
Cal will return to action next weekend. Part of the team's distance contingent will head to the SF State Distance Carnival while the majority of the squad will head to Palo Alto for the Stanford Invitational.
