ASU Edges Cal In Overtime, 12-11

BERKELEY - Despite a career-high seven points (three goals, four assists) from true freshman Nikki Zaccaro, the California women's lacrosse team fell to Arizona State, 12-11, in overtime Sunday afternoon from California Memorial Stadium.

The Golden Bears fell to 4-7, 0-5 on the year.

Kirsten Swanson, Eliza Christman and Ashley Ward also scored twice for Cal, while Jenny Wilkens made eight saves in goal for the second straight game and the 31st time in her career. Meredith Haggerty scooped four draws and caused three turnovers, and Zaccaro also boosted the Bears with seven ground balls. Elizabeth Koehler also chipped in with four draws, two ground balls and a caused turnover.

ASU jumped out of the gate with a quick 2-0 lead. A timeout called by head coach Brooke Eubanks helped calm the Bears down, and Cal went on to score the next six goals in a row to take a 6-2 lead halfway through the first half.

"We tend to have a problem with starting games strong," Eubanks said. "We dig ourselves in a hole early. It was just a wakeup call. I do applaud them for making that switch after that timeout. We definitely need to learn to come out with that mentality from the first draw."

The Sun Devils answered with three goals to snap their scoring drought, but after Zaccaro's second tally of the game, the Bears went into the locker room up, 7-5.

"I think she has been on an upward swing over the past couple of games," Eubanks said about Zaccaro. "Experience is what makes a difference. She has to feel what it feels like to be in those kinds of moments. We learn from making inexperienced mistakes. You have to make those to learn for the next time not to do that. As tough as it is, it's really more of, how do we do this differently the next time we're in that situation?"

Cal and ASU traded goals through the first 14 minutes of the second half before ASU rattled off three in a row to tie the game at nine with just under 11 minutes left in regulation.

Back-to-back goals from Swanson and Christman put the Bears up, 11-9, at the 6:32 mark, but they couldn't prevent the Sun Devils from scoring two goals in the final four minutes to send the game into overtime.

ASU got the opening draw of overtime and converted on that possession to gain its first Pac-12 victory.

The Bears boasted six different goal scorers and seven Cal players recorded points.

"They were really working together in seeing the options, as a whole," Eubanks said. "We have seven options as opposed to having one with her head down and trying to drive. I think it's something we can build off of. There are a lot of positives things we have going for us. Experience is going to help sharpen that up a little bit."

Wilkens collected two ground balls, giving her 107 for her career, one shy of Colleen O'Mara for third all-time in school history.

Haggerty's three caused turnovers tied her for fourth in school history with 56. Laura Cavallo (2004-07) is third with 59.

Chloe Landry amassed two draws, giving her 119 in her career, good for fourth in school history.

Cal meets this week's opponents again next week, this time on the road. The Bears battle No. 13 USC from Los Angeles on Friday, March 30, at 1 p.m. and Arizona State in Tempe on Sunday, April 1, at noon. Both games will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.

Cal dedicated today's game to the Headstrong Foundation. The organization works with teams across the country to raise money to help lives affected by cancer. The Bears raised $4,727 dollars last year for the cause. They wore Headstrong lime green warmup shirts prior to today's contest.
