Cal Blanked In ASU Series
BERKELEY – Inside the circle, No. 20 California's
Kamalani Dung delivered another great effort with 10 strikeouts on the day. Unfortunately, the Golden Bears needed a bit more than pitching against 10th-ranked Arizona State, but could not produce other tangibles to avoid the series sweep in a 4-0 loss on Sunday.
Â
After going 10 innings in both Friday's 4-2 loss and Saturday's 3-1 loss, Cal (24-8, 1-5 Pac-12)Â put runners on in the first three frames during the final game to try to score early. However, the Bears' offensive efforts were futile as they left nine runs on the field to close the day with their first shutout loss of the year.
"We played pretty good this weekend, but could not come up with a key hit to get the outcome we wanted," said head coach
Diane Ninemire. "It was a tough series through all three games. One hit could have made a difference and we were just at the wrong end of things."
Â
Things appeared to be headed to extra innings with both teams remaining scoreless through five frames, but the Sun Devils (26-4,5-1 Pac-12)Â capitalized on a series of defensive mishaps that filled the bags in the top of the sixth. With an 0-1 count, ASU's Skylar McCarty notched a grand slam to provide the final margin.
Offensively,
Bradie Fillmore and
Lindsay Rood both doubled for their lone hits of the game and
Kobie Pettis won at the plate drawing a game-high three walks, but the Bears could not build any momentum in those moments to remain runless.Â
Â
For Dung, Sunday marked her fifth game of the season with at least 10 strikeouts, however, she was given her first loss of the year for a 14-1 record.
Â
Cal heads back on the road to continue its conference slate with a visit to Tucson, Ariz., to face the ninth-ranked Wildcats in a Thursday-Saturday series. The games will stream live on Pac-12.com.
