Bears Begin Homestand With Win

BERKELEY - The first game of an eight-game stretch at Evans Diamond proved a welcome return home for the Cal baseball team as Andrew Vaughn drove in three runs and three Cal pitchers made 11 Golden Bear hits stand up in a 9-3 non-conference victory over UC Davis.

Cal (14-9) used a steady stream of offense to take control, taking the first lead of the evening in the third when Vaughn belted his national-best 13th home run of the season, this one another shot off the batter's eye in center field, to give the Bears a 1-0 advantage.

One inning later, Cal tacked on two more runs on a two-run single by Cameron Eden that scored Darren Baker and Korey Lee. UC Davis (6-13) cut into the Bears' lead with a pair of unearned runs in the fifth but Vaughn provided the response in the bottom of the sixth, lining a two-run single through the left side of the infield to make it 5-2 Cal.

Jonah Davis provided a jolt in the bottom of the seventh, crushing a solo home run well beyond the right field fence and into Edwards Stadium. The Bears added two more runs on a pair of wild pitches and by the end of the seventh held an 8-2 lead.

On the mound, right-hander Rogelio Reyes drew the mid-week start and worked through five innings to earn his third win of the season. The sophomore from Union City, Calif. struck out seven and did not allow an earned run while scattering four hits and walking two. Joey Matulovich relieved Reyes and tossed three innings with Andrew Buckley pitching a scoreless ninth to close the game out.

Vaughn continued his torrid 2018 campaign, finishing the evening 3 for 5 with a run and three RBIs. Darren Baker also helped lead the charge with three hits, two runs scored and an RBI.

"Having a tough weekend Oregon and dropping two of three, it meant a lot to us to come out on Tuesday and win this game," Vaughn said. "It keeps us going after getting a win on Sunday, we did get a victory up there and I think that helped roll into this. As we keep saying, we've got to win all the Tuesday games. It's important for the record, to be playoff-bound. That's our goal this year, to make the playoffs, so we've got to win all the Tuesday games."

Cal won't wait long to resume competition as the Bears prepare to host UCLA for a three-game series beginning Thursday. First pitch for the series opener is set for 7:05 p.m. Action continues Friday at 6:05 p.m. and the series finale is set for Saturday at 2:05 p.m.
