Bears’ Bats Lulled in Series Opener
TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 22 California's bats did not say much on Thursday night in Tucson, Ariz., as the Golden Bears recorded a single hit to open the series against 11th-ranked Arizona and give up game one with a 3-0 loss.
The Bears (24-9, 1-6 Pac-12) connected on several pitches but were unable to get the ball passed the Wildcats (25-6, 4-3 Pac-12) defense that stalled Cal at the plate for the majority of the night behind a strong pitching effort.
Cal's best chance to score came in the top of the fourth with two outs and a pair of runners on. After
Bradie Fillmore reached on error,
Kobie Pettis blooped into left field for the Bears' lone hit of the game to extend things and put Fillmore in scoring position. Unfortunately, a fly out prevented any damage from being done.
"It's a very competitive conference and it's going to be frustrating," said head coach
Diane Ninemire. "It's about how you respond to these things. We have to have a don't quit attitude. We have to get a key hit here and there and that will make the difference. The talent is here and we have to make a game out of it moving forward."
Arizona jumped on the board first with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the second to bring in a runner from second base before extending its lead with single runs in the bottom of both the fourth and fifth frames.
Zoe Conley (10-8) picked up the loss despite a steady night in the circle where she limited the Wildcats to six hits.
Cal continues the series with another 6 p.m. (PT) contest on Friday. The game will be streamed on Pac12.com.
