Cal At Querencia Cabo Collegiate Sunday-Tuesday

Cal continues its 2017-18 season with the third of five regular-season events on its 2018 spring slate and eighth of 10 regular-season tournaments of the entire campaign at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate this Sunday-Tuesday, March 4-6. The three-day 54-hole tournament will be held at the par-72, 6,928-yard Querencia Golf Club in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico. Teams are scheduled to play 18 holes each day with a shotgun start Sunday and Monday at 9 am MT/8 am PT, while Tuesday's shotgun start begins at 8 am MT/7 am PT.

Cal's Querencia Cabo Collegiate History

Cal is playing in the Querencia Cabo Collegiate for the third time in school history after finishing tied for fourth in its debut at the event in the spring of 2016 and 14th in the spring of 2017. Collin Morikawa tied for second at the 2016 tournament and tied for seventh in 2017 to highlight Cal's individual performances at the event. KK Limbhasut and Sebastian Crampton also both played at Cabo in 2016 and tied for 34th. Neither Jamie Cheatham or Kaiwen Liu has played at the event.

The Querencia Cabo Collegiate field is traditionally one of the best in college golf and 2018 is no exception with No. 1 Oklahoma State leading a 15-team field that 10 teams ranked in the top 25. Trio Of Team Victories In 2017-18

Cal has won three events in 2017-18 including a 20-stroke victory in its most recent outing at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate that was its largest margin of victory since a 22-stroke win at the 2013 Alister MacKenzie Invitational. Cal also won twice in the fall of 2017 in back-to-back fashion at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational and against one of college golf's top fields at the prestigious Tavistock Collegiate Invitational. The three victories are Cal's first since winning the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in the fall of 2015 and the most in a season since the 2014-15 squad won four times. The back-to-back were the first for Cal since capturing the John A. Burns Intercollegiate and National Invitational Tournament in consecutive events in the spring of 2015. Cal has also been third at the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational, seventh at the Arizona Intercollegiate, ninth at the Carpet Capital Collegiate and tied for ninth at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational in in 2017-18.

Limbhasut, Morikawa And Crampton Individual Winners

KK Limbhasut, Collin Morikawa and Sebastian Crampton have all been individual medalists in 2017-18. Limbhasut won both the Alister MacKenzie and Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational during the 2017 fall slate, while Morikawa and Crampton were among four players to share individual medalist honors in Cal's most recent event at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate.

KK Limbhasut and Sebastian Crampton both played in their 100th career round at Cal in the first round of their most recent event at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. Collin Morikawa has played in 95 career rounds.

Remaining Schedule

After playing at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate (Feb. 16-18), Cal will continue its 2017-18 campaign at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate (Mar. 4-6) before taking just over three weeks off for spring break. Cal will return to play at The Goodwin (Mar. 29-31) and the Western Intercollegiate (Apr. 7-8) before beginning the postseason with the Pac-12 Championships (Apr. 23-25). The 81-team NCAA Regionals are scheduled for May 14-16 and the 30-team NCAA Championships from May 25-30

Trio Making Return Felt

Jamie Cheatham, Sebastian Crampton and KK Limbhasut have returned to the active roster in 2017-18 after redshirting the 2016-17 season to work on their golf games and focus on their academic schedule. All three have made a significant impact with Limbhasut and Crampton playing in each of Cal's first seven events of the 2017-18 season, while Cheatham has played in four tournaments including each of the first two in the spring. Limbhasut has two wins and six top-20 finishes as previously noted. Crampton's season has been highlighted by his first career victory in his most recent outing at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate when he was among four players including teammate Collin Morikawa, while Cheatham had the best finish of his career at the same event when he tied for fifth.

National Player Of The Year Candidate

Morikawa is a candidate for National Player of the Year and on the watch list for some of the top honors in collegiate golf including the Haskins Award and The Ben Hogan Award honoring the top player in collegiate and amateur golf, respectively. Morikawa has Cal's lowest stroke average at 69.44, which is 0.50 strokes per round under his own school record 69.94 he set in 2016-17. Morikawa record his second career collegiate victory in his most recent outing when he was among four players including teammate Sebastian Crampton to share individual medalist honors at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. Morikawa has four top-10 showings in 2017-18 that have also included his second-place finish that led Cal to a team victory at the prestigious Tavistock Collegiate Invitational. He has been in the 60's during 11 of his 18 rounds including each of the last four and at par or better on 16 occasions including each of his last five. Morikawa is Cal's top-ranked golfer heading into the Querencia Cabo Collegiate at No. 8 according to Golfstat while Golfweek/Sagarin has him at No. 15. He has had Cal's top score a team-high-tying three times in 2017-18.

Cal Career

Morikawa has established himself as one of the elite golfers in Cal history since his arrival in the fall of 2015. Now in his third collegiate season as a 2017-18 junior, Morikawa has two victories as well as a playoff appearances in another, 10 top five, 19 top-10 and 28 top-20 finishes in his first 31 collegiate events while he has a 70.43 career stroke average. Morikawa earned his first career victory at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in March of 2017 after making his first playoff in his previous event at the Southern Highlands Collegiate earlier in the month before sharing a title in his most recent outing at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate last month. He finished the 2016-17 campaign ranked as high as the nation's No. 4 collegiate golfer according to Golfstat and was a Division I PING First-Team All-American, as well as a semifinalist for both the Jack Nicklaus Player of the Year Award and The Ben Hogan Award among a host of honors. As a collegiate rookie in 2015-16, Morikawa became Cal's first player to earn a spot on the GCAA's Freshman All-American team and was also a third-team GCAA All-American and the Pac-12's Freshman of the Year among his many honors.

Amateur Career

Collin Morikawa has been the AmateurGolf.com National Player each of the last two years in 2016 and 2017. His many amateur highlights include helping lead Team USA to victories at both the Arnold Palmer Cup and Walker Cup in 2017, becoming part of the first trio to ever each go 4-0 in their individual events in the latter. He has also won individual titles at major amateur events each of the last three years at the Trans-Mississippi Championship (2015), Sunnehanna Amateur (2016) and Northeast Amateur (2017). In addition, Morikawa reached the Final 16 at each of the last two U.S. Amateurs and at the 2017 Arnold Palmer Cup earned Team USA's exemption into the PGA TOUR's 2018 Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard in March.

Crampton picked up his first career in his most recent outing when he was one of four players including teammate Collin Morikawa to share individual medalist honors at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate.

Career-Best 14-Under Par Twice

Crampton has twice shot a career-best-tying 14-under par 54-holes in 2017-18 in his share of the win at the Wyoming Intercollegiate Desert Intercollegiate (67-69-66 – 202, -14) and tied for second-place finish at Alister MacKenzie Invitational.

Top Career Finish

Cheatham had the top finish of his career when he tied for fifth in his most recent outing at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. His previous top-10 finish came when he was ninth at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in his freshman campaign during the spring of 2016.

Third And Fourth Career Wins

Limbhasut won the third and fourth events of his collegiate career during the 2017 fall campaign with wins at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational and Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic Invitational. The win at the MacKenzie helped Limbhasut earn Pac-12 Men's Golfer of the Month honors for October of 2017 for the first time in his collegiate career. He posted both the lowest 54-hole total of his career with a 15-under par 198 and top two rounds of his career in the victory with a seven-under par opening-round 64 followed by a six-under par 65.

Fall 2017

Liu played in all five events in the fall of 2017 including a tied for ninth-place finish at the season-opening Carpet Capital Collegiate that is his career best and led Cal in the event.

Return To Lineup

After playing in all five events in the fall of 2017, Liu is making his spring debut at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate.

Other Individual Notes

Ben Doyle and Finigan Tilly have been the other two players to see action in the Cal lineup in 2017-18. Doyle was in the team's lineup for each of the last five events before Liu's return at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate and has twice tied for a season-best-tying 25th. Tilly was in the lineup at the season-opening Carpet Capital Collegiate and has played as an individual three times (Alister MacKenzie Invitational, Arizona Medalist Intercollegiate, Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate). William Aldred, Ryan Helgans, Clayton Madey and Robin Wang each played as individuals at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational hosted by Cal, while Madey also played as an individual at the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational and Arizona Medalist Intercollegiate.

Coaches Notes

Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf Walter Chun and assistant coach Eric Mina are in their second season as Cal's coaches in 2017-18. Chun is in his 21st season with the Cal men's golf program previously serving as associate head coach (2009-16), assistant coach (2004-09) and administrative assistant (2002-04) after his playing career for the Golden Bears (1997-2002). Mina was also a player at Cal (2006-11) before spending four years as a professional golfer (2011-14). He is in his sixth season overall associated with the program.
