Cal Allows Comeback in Longwood Loss

HONOLULU – No. 15 California (18-3) closes a week in paradise on a cloudy note, falling 6-4 to Longwood (9-6) and finishing 3-2 at the 2018 Texaco Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament in Honolulu.

Cal scored a run in the opening three frames to try and hold an aggressive Longwood team at bay after it tied things up 2-2 in the top of the third on a sac fly and fielding error.

Junior Lindsay Rood came home on an error in the opening frame and then brought Taurie Pogue in on an RBI single. Sharing was caring through the morning as Pogue sacrificed fly to bring in Cameron Kondo in the bottom of the third to regain a 3-2 lead.

Unfortunately, the Lancers continued to press despite Zoe Conley's 11-strikeout effort in the circle, to match her career-best. Longwood jumped ahead in the top of the sixth in a four-run frame to take the lead for the remainder of the game.

Freshman Mikayla Coelho homered, her second of the weekend, in the Bears' final half, but could not build any offensive momentum in the late frames.

The Bears finish their tournament tour next weekend at Fresno State with a five-game weekend outing, before opening up Pac-12 play in Corvallis, Ore., versus Oregon State on March 16.
