BERKELEY - Head coach
Brooke Eubanks decided to change up her strategy a little bit when the California women's lacrosse team hosted Oregon Friday night at California Memorial Stadium.
The changes worked and the Golden Bears defeated the Ducks, 15-13, in front of the home crowd.
"We've really reflected on the last couple of games," Eubanks said. "We've had a lot of lulls where we play up and down with some momentum swings, so we really focused today on playing in 10-minute segments. We literally did that. We played six, 10-minute segments. We focused on each time frame, the battle and the score for that segment. Once it came and went, we weren't thinking about it anymore. We moved on to the next one. I think that made a big difference today."
Kirsten Swanson scored five times and
Jenny Wilkens made 12 saves, one shy of her season high.
Caroline Corzel garnered a hat trick, while
Eliza Christman,
Parker Garrett and
Susie Ropp each scored twice to lead the offensive charge.
The Golden Bears improved to 6-9, 2-6 on the year, and snapped a five-game losing streak against the Ducks. Tonight's win also marked Cal's first-ever home Pac-12 victory.
"It feels great," Eubanks said. "This is definitely something we can build upon and more Pac-12 home wins are to come. This is extremely special considering the talent level of the opponents we face in the Pac-12."
A back-and-forth first half ended with an 8-8 tie. Neither team held more than a one-goal lead in the first half until Corzel scored back-to-back goals with five minutes left in the first half.
Cal created some separation at the start of the second half, scoring the first five goals, taking a 13-8 lead at the 17:56 mark. Leading 14-9 at the 14:29 mark, the Ducks started a comeback, netting four consecutive tallies to cut the Bears' lead to one with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
Swanson ended the hopes of any Oregon comeback with her fifth goal of the game at the 4:58 mark. Swanson now boasts 35 goals on the year.
Defensively,
Meredith Haggerty and
Elizabeth Koehler combined to collect 11 of Cal's 15 draws with Koehler securing six and five for Haggerty. Now with 66 draws this season, Koehler ranks second on the school's single-season list in that category. On Cal's career lists, Haggerty moves up to second in draws with 134, while Koehler sits fourth with 129. Haggerty also caused one turnover on Friday, which ties her for second Cal's career caused turnovers list.
Cal hosts No. 16 Colorado on Sunday at California Memorial Stadium. Sunday will also mark Senior Day for the Bears seven seniors.
