Cal Offense Falls Short at Washington
SEATTLE – No. 23/25 California went toe-to-toe in the continuation of game one of its series with top-ranked Washington behind a steady defensive effort on Sunday to open the double header day.
Â
Unfortunately, after 4.5 scoreless frames, with the first three played on Friday before rain delays suspended play through Saturday, the Bears allowed a trio of runs in the bottom of the fifth and could not recover as they gave up the early game of the doubleheader, 3-1.
Â
Lindsay Rood recorded Cal's lone run of the day to prevent the shutout. Rood opened the top of the seventh drawing the walk and moved to third after
Bradie Fillmore blasted in a double to put the Bears in scoring position. Rood slid home on a RBI fielder's choice sneaking just under UW's catcher Emma Helm.
Â
On Jackie Robinson Day,
Zoe Conley, who sports the legends jersey number, received the loss (11-10), but gave a valiant effort in the circle recording four strikeouts on eight hits with no earned runs given up in 6.0 innings of work.
Â
Against one of the top pitchers in the nation Taran Alvelo (21-1), Cal connected on pitches throughout the stretch, but only got a pair to fall.
Â
Cal resumes play at noon with game two to be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.
