BERKELEY – Early offense by visiting Santa Clara put the Cal baseball team behind right away and a pair of unearned runs in the middle innings ultimately made the difference as the Bears dropped a 6-4 decision to the Broncos at Evans Diamond.
Cal (21-13) fell behind 4-0 after two innings as a solo home run to lead off the game by John Cresto and a three-run shot by Jake MacNichols in the second put Santa Clara ahead 4-0.
The Bears got their bid for a comeback started in the bottom of the second, hitting the scoreboard on an RBI single up the middle by
Tyrus Greene. One inning later,
Jonah Davis launched a tape-measure shot over the Edwards Stadium bleachers in right field and Cal trailed 4-3.
Santa Clara (16-18) scored the runs that would eventually turn out to be decisive in the fifth inning. A miscommunication at first base resulted in an errant throw, scoring one Bronco to make it 5-3. An RBI single by Jake Brodt added another run and left Cal down 6-3.
Andrew Vaughn got one run back for the Bears by launching his 16
th home run of the season, sending a line drive over the fence in left to cut the deficit to two. That was all the Cal offense got the rest of the way though as Santa Clara limited the Bears to just one hit over the final two innings to close out the game.
Vaughn and Davis led the charge for Cal offensively, picking up seven of the team's eight hits. Vaughn went 4 for 5 with a home run, double, two runs scored and an RBI while Davis finished 3 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs.
Cal got quality contributions out of the bullpen to keep the game close. Sophomore
Arman Sabouri went four innings and did not allow an earned run, striking out six while walking one and scattering three hits. Junior
Joey Matulovich delivered his own strong outing, throwing four scoreless frames while allowing two hits and one walk. He struck out five.
Cal returns to action on Friday to begin a three-game series against Washington. First pitch for the opener is set for 7:05 p.m. Saturday's game is set for a 4:05 p.m. start and Sunday's finale will begin at 12:05 p.m. All three games will be broadcast live by the Pac-12 Network. The Bears' five-game homestand concludes next Tuesday when Sacramento State visits for a 7:05 p.m. non-conference contest.
