Bears Set For Four-Game Homestand
BERKELEY - After garnering the first Pac-12 win in program history, the California women's lacrosse team begins a four-game homestand this week. The Golden Bears will host Fresno State in a nonconference matchup on Friday, April 6, at 7 p.m. from California Memorial Stadium.
The Bears and the Bulldogs used to meet annually when they both competed in the MPSF Conference, and Cal owns a 7-2 overall record over Fresno State.
Cal earned its first Pac-12 victory in school history last Sunday at Arizona State with a 17-13 victory over the Sun Devils in Tempe, Ariz.
Kirsten Swanson led the charge with a career-high seven points (4 goals, 3 assists), while
Parker Garrett scored four times and
Eliza Christman added a hat trick.
Jenny Wilkens recorded 10 saves, her 17th career double-digit save performance. Swanson's seven points were a personal best, while her four-goal performance equaled a career high, and it was the first time she achieved that feat this season. Two of Swanson's four goals at ASU were scored in the final 10 minutes of regulation, helping Cal hold off a comeback attempt by the Sun Devils.
While Swanson currently leads the Cal scoring this season with 37 points on 28 goals and nine assists, she is one of 13 Bears to score at least one point and one goal this season. Seven of the 13 goal scorers have tallied 10 or more scores.
Nikki Zaccaro has been a solid contributor for the Bears in the last five games, all games in which she has started. While her season totals include 22 points on 11 goals and 11 assists, Zaccaro has accumulated seven goals and nine assists in her last five games. She boasts her best games of the year thus far in both meetings against Arizona State. She amassed seven points in the Berkeley (3 goals, 4 assists) meeting and four last Sunday in Tempe (2 goals, 2 assists).
Defensively,
Meredith Haggerty leads the charge with 16 caused turnovers as one of the most aggressive players on the field at all times.
Elizabeth Koehler tops Cal's season charts in ground balls (28) and draws (51).
Haggerty ranks tied for third in school history in career draws with 125 and she ranks fourth in school history in career caused turnovers with 58. Koehler is one caused turnover shy of Cal's career list, while her 114 career draws rank seventh in school history. Wilkens' 110 career ground balls rank third all-time in school history, seven shy of second. Also on the career draws list,
Chloe Landry is fifth with 119.
Fresno State will come to Berkeley with an 8-4 overall record, winners of four its last five and riding a three-game winning streak. Sarah Bloise paces the Bulldogs with 43 points on 30 goals and 13 assists.
After the week off from Pac-12 play this week, the Bears will host Oregon and Colorado next weekend. The game against the Buffaloes will also be Senior Day.
