Bears Face Oregon In Pac-12 Tourney Quarterfinals
BERKELEY - The California women's lacrosse team heads to Boulder, Colo., this week as the No. 5 seed in the inaugural Pac-12 Tournament. The Golden Bears will square off against No. 4 seed Oregon Thursday at Noon from Prentup Field. The Bears and Ducks split the regular season series with Cal gaining a 15-13 victory in the most-recent contest in Berkeley on Apri 13.
Cal has claimed one conference title in program history (MPSF, 2004).
Kirsten Swanson led the charge for the Cal offense last week, posting four points on three goals and an assist vs. the Cardinal. In the win over Oregon, she notched a career-best five goals with her fifth tally ending the Ducks' late comeback effort and clinched the win.
While Swanson currently leads Cal in scoring this season with 53 points on 41 goals and 12 assists, she is one of 13 Bears to score at least one point and one goal this season. Eight of the 13 goal scorers have tallied 10 or more scores.
Nikki Zaccaro has been a solid contributor for the Bears in the last nine games, eight of which the true freshman has started. While her season totals include 31 points on 11 goals and 20 assists (team best), Zaccaro has accumulated seven goals and 18 assists in her last nine games. She boasted her best games of the year thus far in both meetings against Arizona State. She amassed seven points in the Berkeley meeting (3 goals, 4 assists) and four in the Tempe meeting (2 goals, 2 assists). She also collected three assists vs. Fresno State and in the home meeting against Colorado on April 15.
Caroline Corzel was an offensive force during Cal's four-game homestand to close out the regular season, boasting hat tricks in three of the final four games. Corzel totaled four hat tricks this season. Her season high in points came in the season opener at UC Davis with four (two goals, two assists).
Defensively,
Meredith Haggerty leads the way with 18 caused turnovers as one of the most aggressive players on the field.
Elizabeth Koehler tops Cal's season charts in ground balls (39) and draws (74). Koehler's 74 draws rank first in school single-season history, and also tied for fifth in the Pac-12 rankings. Haggerty is third on that list with 70 draws. Both Bears registered nine draws in a contest during the recent four-game homestand - Koehler vs. Fresno State and Haggerty vs. Colorado.
Haggerty ranks second in school history in career draws with 149 and she ranks tied for second in career caused turnovers with 60. Koehler is sixth on Cal's career list for caused turnovers with 55, while her 137 career draws rank third in school history.
Jenny Wilkens' 119 career ground balls rank second all-time in school history.
Wilkens has garnered four double-digit save performances this season and now has 18 for her career. Her season best came at UConn when she made 13 stops. She also made 12 saves vs. Oregon on April 13. Her career best is 20 saves that she recorded as a freshman in 2016 against San Diego State.
