BOULDER, Colo. - In the first-ever Pac-12 Tournament women's lacrosse game, an early seven-goal run from No. 4 seed Oregon gave the Ducks a lead that No. 5 seed California couldn't overcome. The Ducks beat the Golden Bears, 22-9, Thursday afternoon from Prentup Field on the Colorado campus.
Cal's season comes to an end with a final record of 6-12.
Eliza Christman paced Cal in scoring with four points on three goals and an assist. Christman also scooped four draws, tied for the team lead with
Meredith Haggerty.
Kirsten Swanson notched three points on two goals and an assist, while also leading her squad with three ground balls.
Jenny Wilkens made nine saves in goal, her 35th career game with at least eight saves.
The Ducks jumped out of the gate scoring the first two goals of the game and nine in the first eight minutes of the opening half to take a 9-1 lead at the 21:55 mark.
"Obviously, it doesn't go well when they score a goal for eight-to-nine minutes in a row," head coach
Brooke Eubanks said. "Credit to Oregon; they're extremely athletic and very good at taking advantage of opportunities given to them. We were trying to take something away and they were able to counter that. They're very energetic and they came out firing. It took us time to find out feet and it was just too much time to overcome."
Cal didn't stop fighting despite the unfortunate start. In fact, the Bears gained some momentum heading into halftime by scoring four of the final five goals in the first half, including back-to-back points by Swanson in the final 90 seconds. Cal cut Oregon's lead to 11-6 lead at the break with a score at the 0:01 mark.
The Oregon defense clamped down in the second half, allowing only three goals by the Bears.
Cal's season ends with today's loss to Oregon, but Eubanks is optimistic about the progress made this season towards the future of the program.
"It's always hard for outsiders to see how far we came," Eubanks said. "Four years ago, when I first started, we only had three wins. Every year we've come out and gotten better. As hard as it is the see that in the moment to focus on, that's really the big picture. We've put a lot of focus on turnovers. Even in this game, we only had nine. We're making progress. The outlier might not always look like it, but it's something we do take pride in, and I think it's allowing us to inch our way every year. We're trying to be good for a very long time. We don't just want a winning season. We want to have winning careers and be competitive, that takes a lot of time."
