Balanced Defense Earns Cal Series Win at Stanford
STANFORD, Calif. – With another stellar defensive showing by the Golden Bears,
Kamalani Dung tallied her 18th win without a strikeout as California (32-13, 6-10 Pac-12) downed Stanford 3-0 for the second time this weekend to take the series and record its sixth consecutive win.
Â
Dung (18-3) ranked fourth in the Pac-12 in total wins headed into the weekend while
Zoe Conley picked up her seventh save of the season to lead the league. Conley came in as relief in the bottom of the fifth, retiring three batters, including back-to-back strikeouts to close the game.
"Along the same lines as yesterday, we are impressed with our defense and our pitchers," said head coach
Diane Ninemire. "We kept that going on the other side of the ball and timely hits and some strong running got us on the boards. It's good to get another series, but nothing comes easy in the Pac-12."
Â
In a balanced effort, the Bears scored a run in three different innings to keep things out of reach. Freshman
Mikayla Coelho scored the first run of the day jetting from first base all the way home on an RBI double from fellow freshman
Cameron Kondo. Coelho had her best showing at the plate in Pac-12 play recording two hits on the day.
Â
Lindsay Rood also had a day blasting a triple to open the fifth frame before coming across the plate on an RBI ground out from
Bradie Fillmore to provide the final margin. The junior also picked up her league-high 25th stolen base and recorded a pair of hits in game two.
Â
Stanford (22-25, 2-15 Pac-12) struggled with pitching woes as they brought in Nikki Bauer who in the third frame, where Cal drew three straight walks to load the bases.
Kobie Pettis brought
Jazmyn Jackson home on a sac fly to move things to 2-0 in favor of the Bears.
Â
Cal closes the series at Boyd and Jill Family Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m. and looks for its fifth consecutive sweep. The game will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks.
