Cal Downs Pacific In One-Hitter

STOCKTON, Calif. – After riding a 1-0 lead from the top of the fourth inning, No. 24 California put up a four-run half in the top of the seventh to balance the nearly perfect effort from Kamalani Dung in the circle as the Bears cruised to a 5-0 shutout of Pacifc (10-21, 0-0 WCC) in Stockton, Calif., on Tuesday.

The game remained close with the Bears (25-11, 1-8 Pac-12) holding a 1-0 lead after Taurie Pogue scored on an error with two outs in the fourth frame and looked like the slim margin would carry Cal the rest of the way. However, the Bears put together a string of runs on a three-RBI double from Pogue in their final at-bat to break things open.

Dung (15-2) recorded eight strikeouts and gave up a single walk, to finish just shy of her second perfect game of the year. A late hit in the bottom of the seventh prevented the junior's no-hitter and Dung made the Tigers' final batter pay freezing the batter at the plate.

"I thought Kama threw a great game, even though she's a bit disappointed on missing the no-hitter," said head coach Diane Ninemire. "Jazmyn (Jackson) was great early on at the plate, Lindsay found her rhythm at the right time and Pogue came through with the big hit. It was a solid day for us and will carry over into tomorrow."

Jazmyn Jackson paced the Bears' offense with two hits on the day in four at-bats and continues to lead the Bears at the plate with a .368 batting average on the season.

Cal returns to the field tomorrow as the Bears host Saint Mary's at 4 p.m. (PT) at Levine-Fricke Field before taking a break the remainder of the week.
