Cal Drops Regular Season Finale

BERKELEY – After delivering an impressive six strikeouts through the opening three frames, Kamalani Dung and the 24th-ranked Golden Bears (34-19, 7-16 Pac-12) defense looked like they had finally slowed the offensive momentum of the second-ranked Oregon Ducks (47-7, 21-3 Pac-12) on Saturday in the series and regular season closer.

Unfortunately, the Ducks, who've collected four home runs over the weekend, found their short game pulling together a string of timely singles in the top of the fourth to inch ahead on a two RBI one-bagger, which would be enough for not only the series sweep but the outright Pac-12 title on a 2-0 victory.

Cal collected three hits, led by freshman Mikayla Coelho who was perfect on the day with a 2-for-2 showing at the plate, but the Bears we unable to capitalize on the efforts. The Bears were retired eight times at the plate, with freshman Karlee Sparacino accounting for the third hit of the day.

Dung (18-5) received the loss to conclude her first season with the Bears with a complete effort delivering seven strikeouts, six hits, two runs and one walk. The Waianae, Hawaii, native, pitched a perfect game just outside of her hometown in Honolulu on March 1 in the Bears 4-0 win against UTEP.

Notably, Cal's other starting pitcher Zoe Conley finished with her name in the Cal record book as she became the single-season saves leader and also led the league with seven saves on the season.

Offensively, junior Lindsay Rood also topped the conference with 30 stolen bases and seven triples through the regular season. Rood was nearly perfect in stolen base attempts, getting caught just once, in game one of the Oregon series.

Despite the loss, Cal finished the regular season with several highlights, including the 30th consecutive winning season for 30-year program leader Diane Ninemire, who collected her 1,300th win on March 3 against East Carolina in Honolulu.

On a more sentimental note, the Bears also said goodbye to senior foursome Kristin Cullen, Jazmyn Jackson, Kobie Pettis and Taurie Pogue as they played their final game in Strawberry Canyon.

Cal concludes contests at home for the year and awaits the NCAA softball selection show on Sunday at 7 p.m. (PT), which will be live streamed on ESPN.
