Martinez, Johnson Advance To The NCAA Championship
Lauren Martinez And McKay Johnson Both Qualify For First NCAA Outdoor Championship
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – California track & field added two more qualifiers for the NCAA Championship on day two of the NCAA West Prelims on Friday at Hornet Stadium.
McKay Johnson became the second Bear to book his spot at the NCAA Championship as he finished sixth in the discus competition. Johnson, like
Silviu Bocancea did yesterday, earned the best mark of the second flight and the mark held up as he advanced. Johnson set a personal best with a throw of 183-3 on his first attempt to take hold of the second flight. Johnson will look to qualify in the shot put as well as he takes to the ring tomorrow at 4:30 p.m.
Lauren Martinez earned a berth at the NCAA Championship as she was perfect on Friday afternoon. The junior cleared all three bars without a miss and was one of five pole vaulters who didn't miss throughout the qualifying process. The competition was stopped after 12 student-athletes all cleared the bar at 13-8.5, but Martinez was tied for first with four others. She will make her outdoor NCAA Championship debut after taking 10
th in the NCAA Indoor Championship earlier this year.
Ashtyn Davis advanced to the next round of the 110m hurdles on Friday afternoon. The senior had the seventh-fastest qualifying time as he cruised to the finish line in 13.92. Davis will compete in the quarterfinals tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. with a berth to Eugene on the line.
Malik McMorris recorded a discus throw of 171-2 and finished in 25th place. McMorris took the competition lead early in the first flight. He improved on all three of his throws and finished the first flight in third place, but fell down the leaderboard over the course of the next two flights.
Amarie Bremel recorded a throw of 171-8 to take 15th in the discus.
Kendall Mader finished just behind her in 20th place with a throw of 167-3. Bremel finished fifth in the second flight and was in a qualifying position after the first round of the third flight, but she couldn't hold on to the spot. However, both throwers bettered their region rankings coming into the meet as Bremel had the 21
st best throw and Mader was 23
rd.
Annie Boos reset the freshman record in the women's steeplechase for the fourth time this season as she crossed the line in 10:17.77. Boos finished 28
th in the race and set her personal best by more than 12 seconds. She also recorded the second-best steeplechase in school history, moving up from fifth on the list. Boos now only trails Rowena Tam's time of 10:14.94 in the school record book.
Kai Benedict and
Takeshi Okada competed in the men's 3000m steeplechase. Benedict took 42
nd with a time of 9:09.84 while Okada finished just behind him in 43rd with a mark of 9:10.41.
The third and final day of the NCAA West Prelims will start at 12 p.m. PT as
Destiny Parker,
Emma Seyer and
Camryn Rogers compete in the women's hammer throw. The Bears will also see four men compete in the men's shot put. While two men and two women will look to advance in the triple jump. On the track, Davis will look to qualify in the 110m hurdles while
Garrett Corcoran and
Brie Oakley will round out the competition with the 5000m starting at 8:05 p.m.
