Five Bears Earn A Place At The NCAA Championship
Anderson, Simon, Johnson, Kaukolahti And Davis Earn Places At The NCAA Outdoor Championship
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – California track & field added five names to the trip list to Eugene on the third and final day of the NCAA West Prelims at Hornet Stadium on Saturday.
Overall, Cal set seven personal bests over the three-day meet and had 19 of the 26 entries outperform their meet standing heading into the meet. The Bears finished with seven athletes in eight events qualifying for the NCAA Championship, the most entries for Cal since 2014.
McKay Johnson and
Peter Simon booked their spots at the NCAA Championship with their performances in the shot put competition. Johnson finished ¼ of an inch short of his personal best as he threw 64-11.25 to take fourth place in the field. Simon's best throw came on his final attempt as he qualified with a mark of 62-11.50. This will be Simon's second straight outdoor appearance while Johnson qualified in his second event of the weekend after taking sixth in the discus.
After fouling her first two attempts, Anderson sat in a tough position as she took the runway on her third attempt. However, the senior came through in the clutch and set a personal best with a mark of 43-7.75 to tie for sixth place and claim a spot in Eugene. Anderson's mark ranked as the fifth-best in school history as she claimed her second straight NCAA Outdoor Championship berth.
Isabella Marten finished 28
th with a mark of 41-6.50.
Tuomas Kaukolahti was the second triple jumper to qualify as he set a wind-legal personal best on Saturday evening. Kaukolahti leaped 52-4.50 on his second attempt to lock up seventh place and a berth at the NCAA Championship.
Tristan Meye finished in 39
th place with a jump of 48-6.00.
Ashtyn Davis rounded out the Cal qualifiers as the senior ran 13.83 to take one of three automatic qualifying spots in his heat and advance to Eugene. Davis finished third in his heat as he had to avoid Amere Lattin of Houston falling at the finish line. However, Davis will look to improve on his third-place finish as the NCAA Indoor meet earlier this year.
In addition to Johnson and Simon, the Bears also saw standout performances in the men's shot put from
Malik McMorris and
Joshua Johnson. McMorris set a personal best on his final throw of the season with a mark of 59-3.00. McMorris sat in second place after the conclusion of the first two flights, and finished in 19
th place. Johnson threw 57-11 to take 28
th place as a freshman.
Camryn Rogers finished her freshman season with a 13
th place finish in the women's hammer throw. She fell one inch short of the 12th-place threshold for qualification as she threw 201-1. Rogers recorded that throw on her second attempt and sat in tenth place at the time. She sat in the final qualifying spot headed to the final round, but fouled her attempt and one person behind her threw a better mark, pushing Rogers out of a qualifying spot. In their final competitions, seniors
Destiny Parker and
Emma Seyer both improved on their pre-meet rankings. Parker finished 31st with a mark of 183-4. Seyer capped her Cal career with a throw of 179-9 and a 38th place finish.
Garrett Corcoran led the men's 5000m race from the start as he got out fast, but he couldn't maintain the pace. Corcoran finished 11th in his heat and 25
th overall with a time of 14:03.09.
Brie Oakley closed out her freshman campaign by running 16:27.17 and taking 34
th place in the women's 5000m.
