Bears Blanked By Bruins
BERKELEY -- A 5-0 shutout of the Golden Bears snapped Cal softball's eight-game win streak as top-ranked UCLA took the victory in the series opener Friday afternoon at Levine-Fricke Field.
UCLA used several timely hits to contribute to a seven-hit total, while the Bears answered with five hits of their own but left seven stranded throughout the game to fall to the top team in the nation.
UCLA opened with a pair of runs early, using a two-RBI single by Bubba Nickles to bring home both Kylee Perez and Briana Perez, who moved into scoring position on a fielding error.Â
The Bruins led 2-0 after the first inning and both teams were held scoreless until the fourth inning, when UCLA added its three final runs. Another error doomed the Bears when Kinsley Washington got on base with a single, and stayed on the basepaths after a throwing error kept her safe. With runners at first and second, B. Perez tabbed an RBI single to bring Washington home. K. Perez followed behind on the next batter up as Aaliyah Jordan used a single of her own to add a run, and then Rachel Garcia sent a sac fly to the outfield to bring a third runner across.
Cal's best scoring chance also came in the fifth inning, with
Taurie Pogue and
Jazmyn Jackson each ripping singles to get on base. A UCLA error loaded the bases as
Lindsay Rood joined them with just one out on the board, but a pop up and ground out left the trio stranded.
Jackson, Rood, Pogue,
Mikayla Coelho and
Lauren Espalin each turned in a hit for the Bears, and
Cameron Kondo drew Cal's lone walk of the day.
Kamalani Dung suffers the loss, allowing six hits and a pair of earned runs with four strikeouts and two walks.
Kristin Cullen, who replaced Dung in the fifth inning, collected two strikeouts against nine batters faced and allowed just one hit in three innings.
Cal returns to Levine-Fricke Field Saturday at 1:30 for game No. 2 of the series.
