Bears Fall to Bruins
BERKELEY -- A four-run fourth inning wasn't enough to propel the No. 24 Golden Bears past No. 1 UCLA, and Cal fell 10-5 to the Bruins Sunday afternoon at Levine-Fricke Field.
Kobie Pettis and
Mikayla Coelho led with two RBI for the Bears, each also scoring a run in 1-for-4 performances at the plate.
Jazmyn Jackson scored two runs, and
Taurie Pogue went 2-for-4 with an RBI double. The Bears racked up eight hits.
In the first inning,The Bruins drew back-to-back walks courtesy of Briana Perez and Aaliyah Jordan before a double to the warning track in left field by Rachel Garcia plated Perez. With only one out on the board, Bubba Nickles launched toward the face mask of
Kristin Cullen, and the Bruins capitalized when the ball bounced off Cullen and to the outfield. Both Jordan and Garcia scored to give the Bruins a 3-0 lead.
A solo shot over right center by Jordan in the top of the third brought the Bruins' lead to 4-0.
Cal answered with a four-run third in its half of the frame.
Lindsay Rood and Jackson got the Bears going with back-to-back singles before Coelho doubled to center field to plate them both. A two-out shot to right field by Pettis brought both her and Coelho home, and the Bears tied it up, 4-4.
UCLA added another run with a leadoff homer from Madeline Jelenicki in the top of the fourth, 5-4, and then Jelenicki homered once again in the top of the sixth with a runner on base to make it 7-4. A second-straight homer by the Bruins, this time by Brianna Tautalafua, gave UCLA an 8-4 lead through six innings.
The offensive onslaught by the Bruins continued with another pair of runs scored at the top of the seventh as they capitalized on a passed ball and an error, putting the Bears in a 10-4 hole. Cal would not go down quietly in its half of of the seventh. With Jackson and Fillmore on base, Pogue sent a two-out double to center field. Jackson made it home safely on the play, and Fillmore nearly did as well before she was tagged out at home to end the game.
Cal used three pitchers in the effort, with Cullen (0-1) suffering the loss in her start. Cullen allowed five hits and five runs with two walks and two strikeouts. Coelho pitched four innings and allowed four hits and two earned runs with a walk and a strikeout.
