BERKELEY – Former Cal standout Jose Carrera-Garcia has signed a contract with Celaya F.C. and will compete in Ascenso MX, the second division of the Mexican professional league system.

Carrera-Garcia graduated from Cal last winter with a degree in Social Welfare after a stellar collegiate career in which he earned All-Pac-12 honors three times (two First Team selections) and helped the Bears reach the NCAA Tournament twice.

Carrera-Garcia signed with Celaya last month. Celaya opens the Apertura tournament on Saturday against Dorados.

"Jose is a great story for Cal Athletics and our university," Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said. "He graduated from this incredible university as an accomplished student-athlete with a ton of honors in his four-plus years. Jose is with a great club in Mexico."

Carrera-Garcia marks the 15th former Cal men's soccer student-athlete currently playing professionally.
