Bears To Play Sac State At Avaya Stadium
BERKELEY – The Cal men's soccer team will play a regular season match against Sac State at Avaya Stadium, the home of the San Jose Earthquakes, on Sept. 6.
The match will begin at 7 p.m. and admission and parking are free.
"First and foremost, we want to thank (Earthquakes President) Tom Fox and the entire Earthquakes organization for providing this wonderful opportunity for our student-athletes to play a match at the state-of-the-art Avaya Stadium," Cal head coach
Kevin Grimes said. "We are all Quakes fans and support our local team wholeheartedly. For the Cal players to have the chance to experience Avaya Stadium themselves will be an incredible experience."
Avaya Stadium is an 18,000-seat soccer-specific stadium located adjacent to San Jose International Airport. It opened in 2015 and has played host to several major events in addition to Quakes games, including the International Champions Cup, a trio of U.S. Women's National Team friendlies, the 2016 MLS All-Star Game and a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier for the U.S. Men's National Team.
"We're excited to welcome these two prominent local universities and their student-athletes to Avaya Stadium," Fox said. "Both Cal and Sacramento State are strong educational institutions with proud soccer traditions, and we're happy to offer this match for free to our local community."
The Bears have strong connections to the Quakes, going as far back as Grimes' tenure as a player for the team when it was known as the San Jose Clash. Former Cal star
Nick Lima is a current player for San Jose who also attended the Earthquakes Academy, as did seven of the Bears' current student-athletes.
The Bears will play an exhibition game against Saint Mary's on Saturday at Edwards Stadium before opening the 2018 season on Aug. 24 at home against Detroit Mercy. Cal is led by All-Region goalkeeper
Drake Callender (Quakes Academy), who is on the watch list for the 2018 MAC Hermann Trophy. Both Callender and midfielder
Shinya Kadono have been named to the Preseason All-Pac-12 Team.
