BERKELEY – Jennifer Dorr added another noteworthy moment in Berkeley Friday morning as California volleyball opened the 2018 season with a sweep of Chicago State at the Molten Classic to mark Dorr's first win as head coach.
Â
In her collegiate debut as a player at Hawai'i, Dorr recorded her first win at Cal.
Â
"It's a sigh of relief," said Dorr, who started at Cal in 2009 as the program's director of ops, before moving to assistant coach. "All the teams that are playing today are getting the jiggles out."
Â
Matching the team's "tough and together" motto for the season, a collective effort led the Golden Bears (1-0, 0-0 Pac-12) to 25-23, 25-15 and 25-18 sets over the Cougars (0-1, 0-0 WAC) in the first-ever meeting between the programs.
Â
Cal's win was highlighted by impressive play from freshman
Bella Bergmark who led in hitting percentage with a .833 (10 kills, 0 errors, 12 attempts). The Larkspur, Calif., native, also recorded a game-high four blocks.
Â
Freshman setter
Jade Blevins also made her collegiate debut tallying 15 assists, just behind returning starter
Isabel Potter's game-high 17 assists.
Â
"I'm really fired up about the youth in this program. For them to come out, get a win and have good performances to build on their self-confidence, will only help us moving forward. It only gets tougher from here. So hats off to Jade, Bella and Darian (Clark)."
Â
Junior
Bailee Huizenga led with 13 kills (.409) and added a pair of blocks, followed by
Mima Mirkovic's nine kills and 14 digs, a team high.
Â
"We are definitely focused on our side," Dorr added. "Some things we didn't execute as well as we would've liked to, but those things are in our control. They did get better throughout the match, evidenced by the separation in score. I was happy to see we made those changes when asked."
Â
The Bears continue action tonight at 7:30 p.m. (PT) against Rutgers and finish the Molton Classic off on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. versus Colgate.
