The Golden Bears defeated the Raiders of Colgate University at Haas Pavilion on Day 2 of the Molten Classic to finish with a perfect record for their first tournament of the year on Saturday.
 
Mima Mirkovic continued her strong weekend performance with seven kills and 13 digs. For her efforts, Mirkovic was named the Molten Classic MVP. Bailee Huizenga and Preslie Anderson led the offensive effort tallying a game-high eight kills each.
 
Setters Isabel Potter and Jade Blevins pitched in with 31 assists for California (3-0, 0-0 Pac-12), who continued their winning streak by posting a straight set victory (25-16, 25-18, 25-14) over Colgate (2-1, 0-0 Patriot League) to give head coach Jennifer Dorr plenty to be excited about going into next weekend's road trip.
 
Adding to the defense, Anderson also led the team in blocks, tallying a solo block and six assisted blocks during Saturday's title match. One area of focus for the Bears this season has been their defense at the net and improvement was evident as the team accumulated 23 blocks over the course of the three-match tournament.
 
"I think we improved every set that we played, settled down, and were able to execute our game plan throughout the match and tournament," said Dorr. "We are looking forward to the challenges ahead and getting prepared before the Pac-12 season starts.
 
"I was really proud of how our freshmen did today," Dorr added. "Credit it to the starters for putting us in the position to allow a couple players to make their debuts today. It's not easy to be on the sideline for most of the game, and then come in and make an immediate impact. It is really exciting to see."
 
Senior Mackenzie Albrecht made her 2018 debut, while freshmen Makana Meyer and Gabby Bellizzi saw action for the first time as well. Meyer chipped in with 2 kills and Bellizzi recorded the first assist of her collegiate career.
 
The Bears look to continue their strong start to the season as they travel to South Dakota to take on the University of Northern Colorado Bears to open up the 2018 South Dakota Tournament on Friday, Aug. 30 at 8 a.m.
