California returns to Berkeley to face Idaho State for the first time in school history Saturday. Since 2010, the Golden Bears are 5-0 vs. Big Sky schools, and most recently defeated Weber State last season, 33-20.

The Bears defeated BYU in Provo, Utah, last Saturday, 21-18. Quarterbacks Chase Garbers and Brandon McIlwain combined for 343 total yards, passing for 214 and rushing for 119. Garbers threw two touchdown passes while McIlwain scored on a touchdown run and clinched the victory late in the fourth quarter by picking up a first down on a five-yard run on third-and-three from the BYU 39.

Cal ranks first in the nation in with six interceptions. Three of those belong to Jaylinn Hawkins who co-leads the nation in that category individually.

Evan Weaver and Jordan Kunaszyk each made 12 tackles at BYU. Weaver also set a career high with three pass breakups.

Justin Wilcox improved his career record at Cal to 7-7 with the win at BYU. He is 5-0 vs. nonconference opponents, four of which are Power 5 teams (North Carolina twice, Ole Miss, BYU).

Kanawai Noa and Vic Wharton III both reached career milestones at BYU. Noa moved over the 1,000 career receiving yards while Wharton picked up his 100th career reception at Cal.

Saturday's tilt with Idaho State marks the 10th time that Cal will face a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) opponent since the name was adopted in 2005. The Bears are 9-0 against FCS teams, with the most recent game a 73-14 win over Grambling State in 2015.

Dominant Defense
Cal's defense has not allowed a touchdown in the first three quarters in either of its first two contests this season and three times in the Justin Wilcox era. The Bears have allowed its first two opponents - North Carolina and BYU - to score just five times in 28 combined drives. Cal ranks tied for 42nd in the nation and third in the Pac-12 in scoring defense (17.5 ppg). That average is down 10.9 points from last year and 25.1 points from 2016. Cal ranks 27th in the nation in total defense (294.0), which also ranks third in the Pac-12. The Bears ranks fifth in the nation and third in the Pac-12 in passing efficiency defense (78.38).

Defensive Dynamic Duo
Evan Weaver and Jordan Kunaszyk are Cal's leading tacklers this season with 26 for Weaver and 18 for Kunaszyk. Weaver's 19 solo tackles rank second in the country, while Kunaszyk is tied for fourth with 16. Weaver's 26 tackles also rank eighth in the nation and third in the Pac-12. Weaver set a career high with 14 tackles at North Carolina, while tying with Kunasyzk at BYU with a game-high of 12. Weaver collected three pass breakups for the first time in his career and ranks tied for fifth in the Pac-12.

Bears In The Defensive Rankings
Jaylinn Hawkins picked off his third pass of 2018 at BYU after catching two vs. North Carolina. He co-leads the nation in INTs with three, and one of only two players in the country to have three. Camryn Bynum registered a career-high and game-high four pass breakups. After adding one more at BYU, he ranks tied for fourth in the nation and tied for first in the Pac-12 in passes defended with five.  Alex Funches forced a fumble at BYU and is tied for 21st in the nation and tied for first in the Pac-12 in that category.  Three of Elijah Hicks' nine tackles this season have been tackles for loss. The cornerback leads the Bears in that category.

Bears Use Two QBs In Win Over BYU
Chase Garbers earned his first career start vs BYU, completing 18-of-28 passes for 176 yards and two touchdowns, while adding five rushes for 45 yards to give him 231 total yards. Brandon McIlwain also garnered snaps under center, rushing 16 times for 74 yards, the most by a Cal quarterback since Zach Maynard rushed for 78 yards against Washington State in 2012. Through two games this season, they have combined for 184 yards on the ground. McIlwain scored his first touchdown as a Golden Bear on a 2-yard run early in the fourth quarter. The last time Cal used two quarterbacks simultaneously during games was when Aaron Rodgers and Reggie Robertson both saw significant snaps at QB during the first month of the 2003 campaign.

National Honors Candidate Patrick Laird Boasts 3 TDs In Two Games
National honors candidate Patrick Laird scored his second receiving touchdown of the season at BYU last Saturday (25 yards), his second of the season after he recorded a receiving and a rushing touchdown for the first time in his career in the season opener vs. North Carolina. His seven receptions at BYU (53 yards) were a career high. Laird is tied for 29th nationally with two receiving touchdowns, while his 5.5 receptions per game rank 49th in the country and sixth in the Pac-12.
His efforts have Cal ranked third in the Pac-12 in rushing (172.0 ypg). Laird is a national honors candidate and on the preseason watch list for numerous awards including those that honor the nation's top player, running back and student-athlete, as well as those that recognize community service. Laird had a breakout 2017 junior season when he rushed 191 times for 1127 yards and eight touchdowns to become the 16th 1,000-yard rusher in Cal history and the first since Daniel Lasco in 2014 while recording the 19th 1,000-yard rushing season in school history. Laird has an opportunity to become only the third two-time 1,000-yard rusher in Cal history with the others Russell White (3) and Marshawn Lynch (2).
