BEAR NECESSITIES

KADONO NAMED PAC-12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Senior Shinya Kadono was named Pac-12 Player of the week on Tuesday, mainly for his scintillating performance during Cal's 6-2 victory over Sac State at Avaya Stadium. Kadono scored a whopping four goals and added an assist for a staggering nine-point performance, which was the most by a Golden Bear in a match in two years. The four-goal outburst also tied for the most in a match by any Division I player this season. Kadono added a co-team high five shots during a 0-0 tie against UC Riverside. He was also named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week. Kadono, a United Soccer Coaches NCAA All-Far West Region Second Team pick last year and a member of the 2018 Preseason All-Pac-12 Team, leads conference with five goals and 12 points.

NUPHAUS JOINS U19 NATIONAL TEAM
Freshman JJ Foe Nuphaus missed both of Cal's matches last week after being called up to the U-19 U.S. Men's National Team for an invitational at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.  Nuphaus has spent time with the U-19 team previously, as well as the U-17 and U-14 teams. Nuphaus, who was ranked as the 39th-best player in the country last year by Top Drawer Soccer, started each of the first three matches of the season and played in every minute.

EBBS AND FLOWS
Senior Sam Ebstein has been a focal point of Cal's offense so far, ranking second on the team with 15 shots, four points and two goals. He scored the game-winner in the Bears' season-opening win over Detroit Mercy, then tied the score in the second half of an eventual 2-1 overtime defeat at Pacific. Ebstein was an All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention pick last season.

YOUTH MOVEMENT
Cal head coach Kevin Grimes expected his freshmen to make a significant impact this season, and so far he is right on. Redshirt freshman Alonzo Del Mundo and true freshmen Ian Lonergan and Taylor Davila have started all five matches while JJ Foe Nuphaus started each of the first three before missing last week's matches while playing with the U.S U-19 National Team. Fellow freshman Jonathan Estrada, Kaleo Fernandez and Lucas Churchill have all each made contributions as well, with Churchill recording his first career assist against Sac State. Nuphaus was ranked as the nation's 39th-best player by Top Drawer Soccer while Lonergan came in at No. 61 and Davila at No. 66.
