BERKELEY – The Cal women's soccer team will close out the non-conference campaign this Friday, hosting UC Davis at 2 p.m. PT at Edwards Stadium. Coming off a weekend split on the road, the Golden Bears (4-3-0, 0-0-0 Pac-12) return to Berkeley looking to build on their momentum Sunday's 2-1 victory over Oklahoma. Cal will be squaring off against a Davis (3-4-1, 0-0-0 Big West) side that has gone to double-overtime each of its last two outings, falling to San Jose State, 1-0, on Sunday.
Friday's game will be the 13
th meeting all-time between the UC rivals and the third consecutive season in which the teams have met. The Bears topped the Aggies last season in Davis, winning 2-0 behind goals from
Luca Deza and
Miranda Nild.
"It's always nice to be home," said Cal head coach
Neil McGuire. "We're playing a very well-organized and disciplined Davis team who will be up for this match. [UC Davis head coach Twila Kaufman] does a great job in preparing her players for every game and she knows how we play, so we'll have to be on top of our game. It is nice to be back home from a trip to Oklahoma We didn't play our best on Friday against Oklahoma State, who are very talented, but we rebounded extremely well against Oklahoma and came away with a nice split on the weekend. The team emotionally is a good spot and we're looking forward to the match."
The Bears have gotten off to a strong start on the offensive end of the pitch, scoring 14 goals through their first seven matches of the season. Juniors
Kayla Fong and
Abi Kim lead the team in scoring with three goals each, while Nild, a senior from Castro Valley, California, has a pair of game-winners for the Bears, including the deciding goal in Sunday's win over the Sooners. Junior midfielder
Mia Corbin leads the Bears with three assists while 12 different players have registered at least one point this season.
Friday's match is a double-header with the Cal men's soccer team, with the head coach
Kevin Grimes and the Golden Bear men hosting Delaware at 5 p.m. PT.

LAST TIME OUT
For the second season in a row,
Miranda Nild scored the game-winner in Cal's victory over Oklahoma, helping the Bears complete a come-from-behind victory on the road. Â Freshman
Emma Treasure tied the game in the final seconds of the first half with her first collegiate goal, converting off a corner kick by Corbin. Nild gave the Bears the lead for good in the 61
st minute on her second goal of the season as the Bears snapped their two-game losing streak.
Oklahoma opened the scoring in the 29
th minute, finishing from close range off a ball played in from the wing. However, the Bears responded just before heading into the locker when Treasure one-timed her shot in off a corner. Treasure became the first freshman to score for the Bears this season while Corbin picked up her team-leading third assist of the year.
Cal carried its momentum into the second half, creating several chance before Nild tallied the game-winner off a feed from sophomore
Emma Westin.
Freshman goalkeeper
Amanda Zodikoff made her second consecutive start for the Bears and recorded a new personal-best five saves on the afternoon. Zodkoff was one of five freshmen in the starting lineup against the Sooners, along with classmates
Abena Aidoo,
Sydney Collins,
Devin Lozano, and
Paige Metayer.
SCOUTING THE AGGIES
UC Davis enters the weekend looking to snap a three-game winless streak, with its last two matches going to double-overtime. After opening the season with home losses to Stanford and Nevada, the Aggies rattled off three wins in a row, downing Cal Baptist, Sacramento State, and New Mexico. Yet recently, UC Davis has been on the wrong end of narrow one-goal matches, falling to San Diego State, 1-0 at home, before a 1-1 draw vs Weber State and a 1-0 double-overtime defeat at San Jose.
Redshirt sophomore Alicia Sloss leads the squad in scoring with two goals on the season, finding the back of the net against both Nevada and Cal Baptist. The Aggies also return sophomore forward Mahlah Catline, who led the squad in scoring in 2017 and tallied the game-winning goal this season against New Mexico. Senior Alexis Smith started the first six games of the season in goal and posted a pair of shutouts, while redshirt sophomore Jessica Lima has gone the distance in the last two games for the Aggies, making a total of 12 saves.
Head coach Twila Kaufman is in her fifth season with the Aggies and returns seven starters from 2017. Davis finished fifth in the Big West last season, going 3-3-2 in conference and 4-12-2 overall.
NEXT UP
The Bears will be back in action next weekend in Berkeley, hosting Arizona State at 1 p.m. PT on Saturday, September 22, to open Pac-12 play. Cal finished fifth in the conference table last season, posting a record of 6-4-1 in conference play. Cal and Arizona State played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw last season at Edwards Stadium in a match that saw the Golden Bears outshoot the visiting Sun Devils, 23-10. The Golden Bears were picked to finish fourth in the 2018 Pac-12 Preseason Coaches' Poll and play their first three conference games in Berkeley, with home matchups against USC and UCLA to close out the month of September.
