Cal-Idaho State Postgame Notes

  • With the 45-23 win, Cal improved to 3-0 for the second straight year under head coach Justin Wilcox. In addition, Wilcox improved his career record at Cal to 8-7.
  • Wilcox is now 6-0 vs. nonconference opponents, and the Bears have won their last seven straight nonconference games dating back to 2016.
  • Cal is now 10-0 all-time vs. FCS schools and 6-0 vs. Big Sky foes since 2010.
  • Chase Garbers set career highs in completions (20), passing yards (224) and touchdown passes (3). He completed 20-of-25 passes.
  • Ashtyn Davis intercepted Cal's seventh interception this season, which leads the nation. It was the second INT this season for Davis and the third of his career.
  • Davis also scored on his first kick return for a touchdown in the second quarter. It was Cal's first kick return TD since Trevor Davis returned two for scores at Washington State in 2014.
  • Jordan Duncan hauled in his third and fourth career touchdown receptions, also his first two of 2018. The first score came on a 28-yard pass from Garbers in the second quarter. The 28-yard reception was also the longest in Duncan's career. His previous career long was a 25-yard reception last week at BYU.
  • This is the first time Duncan has scored twice in a game. He also hit new career highs in receptions (4) and receiving yards (63).
  • Brandon McIlwain threw his first career touchdown pass to Jeremiah Hawkins, also his first career receiving touchdown.
  • Hawkins also posted career highs in receptions (3) and receiving yards (45).
  • Marcel Dancy rushed for his first career touchdown on a five-yard run. Dancy finished with 11 carries for 80 yards and a touchdown.
  • Cal held Idaho State scoreless in the first quarter. The Bears have not allowed any points scored in the first quarter this season.
  • Cal has not allowed a touchdown in the first half this season, and the Bears have only allowed six points on two field goals in the first half this season (at BYU, vs. Idaho State).
  • The Cal defense held Idaho State without a first down through the Bengals' first four drives of the game.
  • Evan Weaver earned double-digit tackles for the third straight game. He led the Bears with 13, one shy of his career high.  
  • Jaylinn Hawkins and Traveon Beck both collected their first pass breakups of the season.
  • Alex Funches recorded his second sack this season and the sixth of his career.
  • Jordan Kunaszyk picked up his first sack of the season and shared another with Aaron Maldonado who recorded his first sacks of his career.
  • Cal has now won back-to-back games when losing the turnover battle (2-1 in favor of Idaho State today).
  • Addison Ooms has now started the last 27 consecutive games, the only member of the Cal team to do so.
  • Jeremiah Hawkins made his first career start, while Hunter Abel, Nick Alftin, Gabe Cherry, Will Craig, Daniel Etter, Aaron Maldonado, Erick Nisich, Collin Moore, Tanner Prenovost, Nikko Remigio, Daniel Scott, Ben Skinner, Biaggio Ali Walsh and Monroe Young played in their first career contests for the Bears.
