DAVIS, Calif. – A busy weekend of water polo ended with a two-match split for the Cal men's water polo team as the No. 3-ranked Bears pulled out a tense 10-8 win over No. 5 Pacific and dropped a 15-14 decision in overtime to No. 9 Harvard as part of the Aggie Roundup hosted by UC Davis.

Cal gets back to work on Wednesday when it heads to Silicon Valley for a 6 p.m. game at Santa Clara. Action returns to Spieker Aquatics Complex on Saturday when the Bears host San Jose State at 11 a.m.

Cal 10, Pacific 8

Freshman Jack Deely's goal with 3:04 remaining gave the Bears their first lead in yet another thrilling contest with the Tigers and a five-goal fourth period ultimately made the difference as Cal notched its second win of the weekend over a top-10 opponent.

After wrapping up a win over Long Beach State just after 7 p.m. on Friday in Berkeley, Cal returned to action at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday in Davis for its second matchup with Pacific in seven days. That quick turnaround for the Bears contributed to a sluggish start and the Tigers grabbed the early lead with Cal trailing 2-1 after one period and 5-4 at halftime.

Each team scored once in the third period to maintain the one-goal margin but, after Pacific's Engin Ege Colak widened the gap to two, Cal took command. Reigning MPSF Player of the Week Safak Simsek drew the Bears even, scoring once on the 6 on 5 and once at even strength to tie the game at 7 with just over four minutes to play.

Another man-up chance for Cal helped the Bears take their first lead. Six seconds after a Pacific exclusion, Deely connected for his first goal of the game to make it 8-7with 3:03 to play. That's where the score stayed until the clock ticked under 30 seconds and a strike by Spencer Farrar gave Cal an all-important insurance goal. Pacific scored with 18 seconds left to narrow the gap but a full-length shot by Vassilis Tzavaras just before the buzzer finished the scoring with Cal ahead 10-8.

Bernardo Carelli delivered another solid performance in the cage with nine saves. Tzavaras, Simsek and freshman Joe Molina led the offense with two goals apiece while Farrar, Jordan Hoover, Deely and Odysseas Masmanidis added one apiece.

Harvard 15, Cal 14

A sudden death thriller went the way of the Crimson as a goal by Harvard's Austin Sechrest made the difference and Cal dropped its first match of the 2018 season after a back and forth battle.

Without much to separate the teams throughout four periods, Harvard forced overtime as Sechrest scored on a 6 on 4 chance with seven seconds left. Each team scored once in the first overtime period with Simsek finding the net for Cal and Dennis Blyashov connecting for the Crimson.

A goal by Masmanidis put Cal ahead in the second OT period but Blyashov evened the match with 21 seconds left. That forced sudden death and Sechrest netted the game-winner to give Harvard the win.

Simsek led the Bears on the scoresheet with four goals. Jordan Hoover added a hat trick while Mateus Stellet scored twice. Tzavaras, Molina, Deely, Masmanidis and Miles O'Brien-Schridde all finished with one goal. Spencer Tagg played through regulation and the first OT period and made 15 saves before Carelli entered in the second OT and made one save.
