OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – Collin Morikawa (67-66-72 – 205, -5) held a late lead Sunday before second at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational in the first event of his senior campaign. Cal (273-286-297 – 856, +16) was third as a team in the 54-hole event hosted by Illinois that concluded Sunday at the par-70, 7281-yard Olympia Fields Country Club.

Morikawa trailed eventual individual medalist Matthew Wolff of Oklahoma State (65-69-70 – 204, -6) by two shots before a three-shot swing on the par-five 15th hole after Morikawa birdied and Wolff double bogeyed gave Morikawa a one-stroke lead. Morikawa's advantage was short-lived when he bogeyed the par-three 16th to fall back into a tie with Wolff. Both players made pars on the par-four 17th before Wolff claimed a one-stroke victory he made a par four on the 18th and Morikawa three-putted for bogey.

"This week was another learning experience but really a motivating factor for the rest of the season for me," Morikawa said. "I'm happy I'm putting myself in these positions but need to really learn how to close it out every time I'm in this spot."

The top-two finish was the eighth for Morikawa in his collegiate career including three victories, while it was also his 14th top-five and 25th top-10 showing in 37 stroke-play events at Cal.

Morikawa started Sunday's final round in the lead with a one-shot advantage over Wolff but quickly fell three shots off the pace when a Wolff birdie on the par-five first followed by Morikawa's bogey on the par-four third and double bogey on the par-four fifth. Morikawa got back to within a single shot of Wolff after back-to-back birdies on the par-three sixth and par-four seventh but a bogey on nine put him two back heading into the back nine. Wolff maintained a two-stroke lead until the 15th with both players matching scores on the first five holes of the back nine with four pars and a single birdie on the par-four 12th.

Sebastian Crampton (68-73-75 – 216, +6), Kaiwen Liu (71-72-76 – 219, +9), James Song (67-76-76 – 219, +9) and KK Limbhasut (71-75-74 – 220, +10) were also in the Cal lineup and each had top-40 finishes with Crampton tied for 22nd, Liu and Song tied for 31st and Limbhasut tied for 40th.

Defending national champion Oklahoma State (273-278-278 – 829, -11) won the team competition by 18 strokes over second-place USC (287-281-279 – 847, +7). Cal had been tied with Oklahoma State for the lead after round one.

"We got off to a bad start today, and it was an uphill battle from there," Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf Walter Chun said. "But I'm proud of how the guys kept grinding and trying to right the ship. There's a lot to learn from the event and also a lot of positives to take away."

Cal will return to action with The Big Match against Stanford on Thursday at Menlo Country Club in Woodside. The men's and women's teams for both the Golden Bears and the Cardinal will play in the event.
