BERKELEY – The Cal men's soccer team reeled off a hefty 22 shots and dominated possession for most of the match but was forced to settle for a 1-1 tie against No. 15 UMass Lowell on Sunday at Edwards Stadium.
The Bears (4-1-2) had numerous high-quality scoring chances, but were only able to find the back of the net once when Pac-12 leading scorer
Shinya Kadono notched his seventh goal of the season in the 58
th minute. Kadono dominated the River Hawks side of the field, consistently pressuring UMass Lowell and finishing with eight shots by himself.
Junior
Simon Lekressner, sophomore
Francisco Perez and freshman
Taylor Davila each had three shots apiece. Three of Kadono's eight shots were on frame.
"It was an incredible performance," Cal head coach
Kevin Grimes said. "We had glorious chances to win the game. It was just one of those days where the ball just wouldn't cross the line. But it certainly wasn't from a lack of creating or effort. We put forth 110 great minutes, and I think that's all you can ask of your team."
The River Hawks (5-1-2) knotted the score in the 66
th minute off of a corner kick.
Injured All-Pac-12 midfielder
Sam Ebstein missed the match for the Bears, who have been hit hard by injuries during the early season.
"We're getting contributions from so many guys," Grimes said. "We had a number of players come off the bench today and just do great. They really gave us a boost, and they've been doing it all year long. They give us so much positive energy."
The Bears close out the nonconference portion of the schedule at Santa Clara on Saturday evening.
