BERKELEY – Cal's home winning streak came to an end on Sunday afternoon, as the Golden Bears (3-2-0, 0-0-0 Pac-12) dropped a 3-2 decision to UC Santa Barbara (5-1-0, 0-0-0) in overtime. Gauchos' midfielder Madeline Gibson ended the match in 96
th minute with a strike from just outside the box, handing Cal its first home defeat of the season.
Emma Westin and
Abi Kim both scored for the Bears in the loss.
The final leg in a three-game homestand for the Bears, Sunday's contest proved to be a tale of two halves. The first half saw the Bears dictate tempo and control the flow across the pitch. Cal's pressure and ball movement paid off when Westin opened the scoring with her second goal of the season. Midfielder
Daisy Cleverley picked up the ball in the middle of the park and found a wide-open Westin on the right wing. The sophomore from Stockholm, Sweden took a touch before blasting a shot on target that beat Gaucho's goalkeeper Natalie Hill.
Cal doubled its advantage less than ten minutes later when Kim found the back of the net for the second consecutive game. Bears' midfielder
Luca Deza got endline in the 20
th minute and played a cross into the box that took a deflection off a Gauchos defender. Hill got a hand to it, but Kim was there waiting for the rebound and headed it home for her third goal of the 2018 campaign. Kim has now tallied five points (two goals, one assist) in her last two matches and leads the team with seven total points on the season.
Cal held a 5-0 advantage in shots in the opening half and a 4-0 edge in corners.
However, the second half saw an inspired effort by the visiting Gauchos, who looked to rebound from their first loss of the season suffered Friday night against San Francisco. Santa Barbara came out of the locker room looking to attack. The Gauchos got on the board in the 60
th minute when Cal was unable to fully clear a cross played in. The ball found its way to UCSB's Mallory Hromatko near the top of the box, who took a shot that was deflected right into the path of Sydney Magnin. The senior midfielder beat Cal goalkeeper
Olivia Sekany from close range for her first goal of the season.
Santa Barbara tied the match in the 81
st minute when Jessica Wright got loose on the left wing and crossed it into the box to the feet of Shaelan Murison. The Gaucho's leading scorer this season, Murison took one touch across her body before ripping a left-footed shot.
Cal had an opportunity to close out the game in the final seconds of the regulation, when the Bears were awarded a free kick just outside the box, but
Miranda Nild's strike went over the cross bar.
Playing its first overtime of the season, the Bears earned a corner kick in the opening minutes, but were unable to capitalize. The Gauchos quickly responded and earned a throw-in deep in the Bears' defensive half. Cal got to the initial service first, but the clearance fell to an on-rushing Gibson, who ended the match with her first goal of the season.
Sekany made three saves for Cal in the loss, as Cal now moves to 3-2-0 on the season.
The Bears will now hit the road, heading to the Sooner State. Cal squares off against No. 14 Oklahoma State on Friday, September 7, before taking on Oklahoma on Sunday, September 9. The Golden Bears swept the Cowgirls and Sooners last season in Berkeley, registering a 2-0 win over Oklahoma before closing the weekend with a 3-0 upset win over 14
th-ranked Oklahoma State.
