BERKELEY – California looked to extend its 12-game run against Arizona State after sophomore
Emma Westin struck with an early goal to give the Golden Bears a 1-0 advantage in the 27th minute of play in the Pac-12 opener at Edwards Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Unfortunately, the sunny day turned dim for the Bears (4-4-1. 0-1-0 Pac-12) as they allowed the Sun Devils (6-2-0, 1-0-0 Pac-12) to recover on a pair of second half goals to clip what would have been the Bears' 13th consecutive win against their visiting league foes and instead became a 2-1 loss.
Cal struck first after trading control for most of the first half. The Bears went into attack mode finding themselves inside the box on back-to-back possessions and Westin capitalized on the momentum, finding the back of the net for the third time this season on an assist from
Miranda Nild. With the score, Westin joins Abigail Kim and
Kayla Fong as the team's leading scorers.
The Bears hoped to hold on to its momentum from the first period, but the Sun Devils fortune quickly changed after forward Nicole Douglas knocked in the ball on a deflected save for the equalizer in the 70th minute.
Risky defense hurt Cal down the stretch and ASU took control with a strike inside the box that jet by Cal's defense and goalkeeper
Amanda Zodikoff in the 82nd minute for the game winner. Zodikoff finished with three saves on the day.
Cal falls to 0-1-0 in Pac-12 play and 3-2-1 at home on the season.
The Bears will be back in action at home on Thursday, September 27, hosting No. 3 USC at Noon PT. The Trojans (8-0-1, 1-0-0 Pac-12) opened Pac-12 play with a 3-0 win against Washington on Saturday.
